She pulled her head back and looked at me, and then leaned forward to kiss me. I was shocked, but I managed to turn my head so she landed on my cheek.
She looked confused and I said, “You’re having a really crazy day, Rollie. You’re a beautiful girl and I can’t imagine there’s a single man on Earth who wouldn’t love to kiss you.”
She stared at me and her bottom lip trembled. “But… but you don’t want to kiss me?”
I stroked her cheek and said, “I have never wanted anything more than to kiss you,” I said. “But right now, you’ve made a really big change and it’s overwhelming you. If you kiss me right now and I let you, tomorrow when you’re feeling better, who knows how you’ll feel.”
She looked at me in wonder and said, “You… you really are a good person.”
“Let’s hope you still think that after working for me for a while,” I said.
She smiled and lifted her arms up straight from her body as if she was about to pretend to be an airplane. “Do this,” she said. I looked at her but shrugged and did it. She said, “Now close your eyes and count to three.”
I chuckled and closed my eyes. “One. Two—”
I didn’t get any further, because she put her mouth on mine and kissed me. I was too shocked to respond and it didn’t last long at all. Then, she let me go, leapt off my lap, and said, “There. Got to kiss you after all.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at her and I shook my head. “I’m gonna have to watch out for you, aren’t I?”
She giggled and said, “Only when you refuse kisses.”
I stood and said, “I can help you with your stuff now or tomorrow, whatever you’d like. I… I took the liberty of filling your cabinets and your refrigerator. Of course, any time the club kitchen is open, you can eat there. Every employee gets lunch and dinner, unlimited non-alcoholic drinks, and two free regular drinks. For everyone else, they only get the booze on their days off, but you can have two drinks any night.”
She seemed absolutely overwhelmed.
I said, “So I’m going back to the club. I’m sorry but there’s no door from the outside so you have to go through the club to come and go, but I hope you like the place anyway.”
“It’s perfect,” she breathed out.
As I walked away, all I could think was it wasn’t even close to as perfect as she was.
