Fall From Grace

I start to panic but keep a straight face. “Uh, yeah, sure. What’s it about?”
“Is Grace working in your office?”
“She was there earlier. I don’t know if she still is.”
He nods. “Let’s head to my office then.”
Fuck. He cannot know. There is no way he could unless Grace told him. But why would she? She knows he would flip out.
We get to Owen’s office and I clench my jaw, half waiting for him to punch me in the face. “What’s up, man?”
“Grace was asking me questions yesterday.”
I raise a brow at him. “Was she finally asking you for advice?” I tease to hide my nerves.
“Fuck off, bro.” He shakes his head, laughing. “She was actually asking about you.”
“Why?” I ask curiously, wondering if it has to do with our relationship or not relationship, whatever it is we have.
Owen leans against the front of his desk and folds his arms over his chest. “She was asking about your time with Pennington. When you worked there, if I knew what cases you worked on.”
Every muscle in my body tenses at that. “What did you tell her?”
“I told her I had no idea. I was too caught up in my own internships and jobs to pay attention to what you were doing.”
I chew my lip. “Do you think she suspects I’ve done illegal things to win a case?”
He shrugs. “I don’t know. But she asked if you were there when Williams was on trial for initiating a sex ring.”
“Fuck.”
Owen nods. “I told her no. That you already moved here, but she’s a journalist brother and a fucking good one. I know she’ll dig if she didn’t believe me.”
“You think she is going to write a piece on me?”
“I have no idea. I sure as hell hope not. But I still have no idea why she left DC. And I hope it’s not because she found a story here. And lied to my face and begged her way into this office to get the story.”
There is no way. No fucking way that she has been lying to me this whole time. I saw the way she told me the truth, at least what I thought was the truth, when she opened up to me in Wilmington. Unless it was all a lie. A lie to cover up the fact that she is trying to investigate me. Maybe that was why she was at the bar that night. Wanted to seduce me into a one-night stand. Maybe she knew who I was the entire time, and this is all a game to her. Well, fuck if I let her try and destroy me.
“You okay, Car?”
I nod. “Yeah. Fine.”
“Just be careful what you say around her. She’s my sister and you’re my best friend. I don’t want to lose you both.”
I nod and head out of his office. A kind of fury boiling in my veins. I fury I never had with Tiffany and her bullshit and her leaving me. No, this is something on an entirely different level. And I am not going to let Grace Prescott destroy me.
