“Oh, fuck off, Rebecca,” Emilia said from her desk.

“Chasing thrills?” Jack stood up now, moving around his desk to stand in front of Mia and looking directly into Rebecca’s angry face. “You think this is just some fling?”

“I think you’d say anything to make sure she wasn’t fired.”

Surprising them all, Jack turned abruptly and walked into Mia’s office, opening the desk drawer and pulling out two handfuls of sticky notes. He came back and shook them in Rebecca’s face.

“I’ve been writing her notes for months. Cheap thrills my ass. Mia Emerson is the most amazing person I’ve ever met. She’s kind and kick ass. She doesn’t shy away from anything, unlike you, Rebecca. And this between us is so much more than sex!” He put the sticky notes on his desk, walked back into Mia’s office and brought out two more handfuls of post-it notes. Climbing on his desk, looking a little fevered, Jack shouted across the room; “I love her! I love Mia Emerson!”

The office erupted in cheers as Mia stood there, absolutely stunned. As if in slow motion, Jack climbed down from his desk, walked to Mia and pulled her into his arms. He looked deep into her eyes and she felt like her heart was going to explode. In that moment, everything around them melted away.

It was just her and Jack, and their love for each other. Mia grinned.

“I love you,” Jack said softly. “I’d do anything for you. I quit, Mia. I quit and I love you and please don’t argue anymore.”

“I love you, Jack.”

He pulled back so that his eyes could roam her face, and he returned her smile. “You do?”

“I do.” She laughed. “I love you.”

Mia reached up, unable to bear it anymore. She put her hand on the back of his neck, pulled his head down, and crushed her mouth to his. She poured everything she felt for him into that kiss, her love, her joy, her shock. He threw the sticky notes in the air as he swept her up and swung her around as the notes fell back down on them like confetti.

And Mia thought, for the hundredth time since meeting Jack, that it was funny how your life could turn around in just a matter of minutes.
