sure that the ingredients are here. She goes running every
morning and has a shake after that. She makes that herself. I
guess I’m not the best when it comes to mixing kale and other
greens in the blender.”
Haley made a face. “Gross. I don’t blame you. So she won’t
eat things like pancakes or waffles or desserts and you’ve been
dying to use your special talents?” She winked at him, and she
swore that she saw Jean blush before he turned around.
“If you want those things, I’ll make them.”
“You know, pancakes do sound amazing…”
Half an hour later, Haley was seated at the island, devouring
the most delicious pancakes she’d ever tasted. Her dad could
cook. That wasn’t up for debate. That being said, though, he
generally only liked to make things the fancy way. He never
made pancakes or simple comfort foods.
“Oh my God,” Haley moaned, making Jean flush for real.
“These are so good.” She waved her fork at him. He was on
the other side of the island, watching every bite. “You’re
seriously talented, you know.”
Jean snorted. “Not so much. I need this job. I haven’t made
it cooking anywhere else.”
“That’s insane. You should open up a breakfast place.
People will forgive you for a lot of things if you can make a
mean set of pancakes like this. Or no. A bakery. If you like to
make things like that.”
The older man’s smile was sweet and shy. “If I had the
money, it would be a pleasure. For now, this job is more than
enough.”
“Oh. Yes. Of course. I didn’t mean…sorry.”
“That’s alright. I understand.”
