could use it as a bargaining tool to be able to get out of here,
and her dad could still keep the loan. Maybe they’d be in an
even better position.
Haley wasn’t overly brave. In high school, she’d been pretty
shy. She’d never been impulsive, despite what Claire thought
about her behavior here. She would rather study in quiet than
party. She’d never been one of those teenagers who drank and
got out of control. Right now, though, she made an impulsive
decision. Claire had warned her about being reckless, and she
was going to do just that.
She was going to get underneath the ice queen’s skin and
melt her from the inside out. She was going to seduce a
woman who was far older and more experienced than she was,
and then she was going to use it to cut the ties that bound her
and her dad to Claire.
Claire just stood there. She didn’t look angry anymore, but
she didn’t have to be angry to emanate some strange force.
The air seemed to shiver and shimmer around her. She bent it
to her will, as she very likely bent everything else. Her
presence was so dominant that Haley wanted to shrink back,
but she wouldn’t allow herself to take the coward’s way out.
The thought of bending that power, of breaking into that
steel will was so wicked that it made Haley’s blood turn to ice,
then it burned, burned so scalding hot. They were so close that
Haley hardly had to move. She reached up and cupped Claire’s
face, then stood on her tiptoes in her flats, arched up, and
pulled Claire’s face down to hers.
Claire didn’t help or participate, and Haley practically fell
into her. Her hands left her face to catch herself with the front
of Claire’s black blouse. It was always black. Black blouse.
