That would garner some attention, wouldn’t it?

What if she doesn’t want to see me?

I very much doubt that’s true. She’ll want to see you.

What if I can’t find the right words to say?

You’ll know exactly what to say when the time comes.

Haley was surprised that it was Snake who answered the

door. She assumed that because she was gone, her bodyguard

would be out of a job. It looked like Claire had found him

something else to do. He grinned so wide at her that she was

filled with happiness at the sight of his hard face and close-

cropped hair. He led them in, her grandma silently marvelling

at Snake’s size by letting out little gasps that weren’t her style

at all.

Claire’s house wasn’t dripping in ornate finishes or glitzy

wealth, but it was still a huge place, and everything cost

money and was high quality, and Haley’s grandma remarked

on it. Claire’s house was so different than her grandparents’

Brooklyn townhouse. The only reason they could afford that

was because they’d bought it ages ago. Now, the property was

worth ten or fifteen times what they’d originally paid. It was a

quiet, humble little townhouse where she’d grown up. Her

grandpa preferred homey décor and comfy furniture, and

everything was worn in from living. It was nothing like

Claire’s house, which screamed opulence and class, and

Haley’s grandma’s little gasps about the size of Snake turned

into gasps about the house.

“I-I came to see Claire,” Haley said to Snake’s retreating

form. She knew he was leading her toward the kitchen. “But if

I could say hi to Jean, that would be great.”

“Miss Finley is in the kitchen.”
