“How did you know I paid for his lawyer?”
“I had my suspicions when the public defender was no longer representing him. It wasn’t hard to get a buddy of mine to check the visitors’ log and confirm that you went to see him.”
“Does anyone else know?”
“Don’t worry about it. Nobody will find out.”
Again, he made a move for the door, and again, I blocked him. “I know you don’t care one way about Cosmo. Why would you keep this to yourself instead of reporting me?”
“You’re right. I don’t give a shit about him, and him presenting this ace out of the blue like that is even more reason for me not to trust him. He might not have pulled the trigger himself, but he knew what that sick fuck was doing, and he didn’t report it.”
“They brainwashed him, Knight.”
“There’s only so much I can do to save your ass. Don’t do anything stupid.”
“But why?”
“Don’t be daft, Hunter.” He caught my tie and yanked, then slammed his mouth on mine. The kiss was over before it had begun. “For some reason, I like you, Hunter Neely, and I don’t want anything to happen to you. Call me if anything goes wrong, and I don’t mean just for sex. If you want to talk or whatever… but sex too if you’re game.”
This time when he walked out, I didn’t stop him. I lost track of the time I spent in the stairwell, absorbing the information overload.
Cosmo was no longer being charged with a crime. Good.
Cosmo needed to be protected from a possible bounty on his head. Bad.
Cosmo had declined to go into WITSEC and asked to be under my protection.
So fucking bad.
I composed myself, slipped out of the stairwell, and returned to Cosmo’s room. Knight was gone. My mouth still tingled from his hard lips. The kiss had been so raw. Would I have liked it if he had kissed me deeper and given me the chance to reciprocate?
At the sight of a sleeping Cosmo in the hospital bed, thoughts of Knight faded away. All that was important was keeping this precious boy safe no matter what it took.
