The Bodyguard Affair

“Hello?” A woman’s voice at the other end of the line. And a familiar one at that. “Ellen Perry speaking.”
The saliva dissipated from Bianca’s mouth. “This… this is Bianca Black.”
“Oh, Bianca! How lovely to hear from you! I’m so glad you got my letter. I was worried that you hadn’t.”
It was Ellen who sent the letter? But Bianca couldn’t afford to hesitate now. “You said you have something to tell me about my mom?”
“Yes, but we shouldn’t speak over the phone. I have a place where you can meet me. Quite secure, I assure you.”
Bianca chewed her lip. While Ellen seemed harmless, Bianca couldn’t help but wonder if she could trust her. Was her mother’s hostility toward Ellen purely because the woman had some kind of dirt on her? Was Ellen the person her mother had been so afraid of all along?
It was looking more and more likely. Whether Ellen was actually a threat, Bianca didn’t know. What she did know was that right now, she wanted the truth.
And she’d do anything to get it.
“Okay,” she said. “Where should I meet you?”
This was reckless. Possibly even dangerous. But if Ellen meant her harm, Bianca would be prepared.
