When she nods again, he lets her go, and she slowly unwraps herself from him. Mason then helps her into the car, shutting the door once she’s settled, before turning back to me. I knew they talked most days, but I had no idea they werethisclose.

“What happened in there?” Mason quietly asks so Grace won’t hear, but his glare is loud enough.

“I got her out of there. Now we’re leaving. That’s it.”

“That’s not an answer, Sebastian! What did he give you, the man from before? Why did she come here in the first place?”

With a sigh, I tip my head back. Mason isn’t going to let this go, but I know if I tell him the truth, he’ll fuck everything up. “Grace helped me find the fuck who killed my parents. You know that. In exchange for the information, I helped her,” I say, twisting the truth into something he’ll hopefully accept. “This is why she came.” I hold the passport out to him.

Mason looks at my outstretched hand for a moment before taking it. After turning it over in his hands, he opens it and inspects the information he finds. His gaze lifts to mine as he pulls the ID that had been wedged inside the cover out. “Why—”

“Now’s not the time for this conversation,” I say, glancing behind him to where Grace sits in the car. “She got scared and ran. You can blame me all you want for tonight, Mason. Hell, I fucking blame myself, but she’s safe now.”

Mason glances over his shoulder before handing the passport back to me. “You’re right. This isn’t the time. But we’re not done.”
