Chapter Sixty-Five

Sierra

–Griffin: Lori gave me the box.

Oh, good.I look at the text as I return to my office after a meeting with accounting. So Griffin and Lori had a chance to talk, like she wanted. Hopefully, she’s alleviated his worries about his career.

Smiling, I wait for him to say more.

But nothing else comes. After waiting five minutes—maybe he was interrupted by a student or something—I run out of patience.

–Me: Is that all?

–Griffin: If you find anything else of mine, you can toss it.

My jaw slackens, and all the feeling in my legs vanishes. If I weren’t seated, I’d fall on my ass for sure.

How can he not have changed his stance at all?Didn’t Lori tell him what she said when I talked with her? Did he listen when she explained that it doesn’t matter who his parents are? Or the fact that his inspiring our latest sex toys really doesn’t diminish his credentials as an amazing economist?

My phone slips from my numb hand.

Maybe the article and the comment by the student were actually a convenient pretext for him to get rid of me because he’s realized I’m not what he wants after all. Just like Mom’s death was a convenient reason for Dad to wash his hands of me, treating me as though I had nothing to do with him. Just like exchanging wedding vows made Todd aware that he didn’t really want to marry or be a good husband to me.

I blink away sudden tears. God, I’m so emotional. It must be the pregnancy.

I put my hand over my belly, needing the contact with the triplets, even though they probably can’t feel me. “Little ones, it’s just you and me. But it’ll be okay. I’m going to make sure that you’ll never, ever feel the lack from not having your daddy around. We’re going to be great together.”
