“No problem,” I say, and despite my angry tone I do mean it.

“We’ll hold you to it,” Cross says. “You can go now. And don’t be late for your appointment at that foundation.”

I nod and slide forward on the sofa so I can stand up.

“And I don’t have to tell you not to reveal anything about what we do here or what the Riders tried to do with those girl scouts, right?” Cross adds.

I sit back down with a thunk and glare at him. “Of course not, Cross. What do you think I am?”

“Good,” he says and leaves my question unanswered. Probably for the best. I don’t think I’d like his answer one bit.

I leave the room feeling about an inch tall. They didn’t yell at me, or berate me, or even punish me. But the obvious mistrust of me that they so clearly showed is worse than all those things combined.

It sounded like they are giving up on me. Like they no longer have any real trust in me. Can I even earn that trust back? Right now, I’m not so sure at all and it stings.
