“It might not feel like it, but graduation is around the corner, sweetheart, and you’re smart. You can move to the city with grades like the ones you have, I’m sure you’d get a scholarship if you really wanted to—”

“I don’t plan on leaving Brown Bay.”

He studied me for a few moments before he leaned forward and placed the envelope down hard on the coffee table. “Is it because Hunter’s sticking around?”

Yes, sort of. It was none of his business. “I like Brown Bay.”

“This town is a dark pit now, Skye, now that those bikers have moved in.”

Mom was looking at me, listening intently as I searched for a response. “A lot of courses have moved online,” I explained. “I don’t need to move.”

“What’s Leo planning on doing?”

I shrugged, pretending not to know. “Probably work for his dad? I’m not sure.”

“Is he staying?”

He was. “It’s possible.”

“I don’t see him around much.”

“I’ve been really busy.”

“I hope you didn’t choose theotherone over him.”

I swallowed a curse and picked the backpack up, throwing it over my shoulder. Not wanting to keep talking about this shit, I trudged past him. “I’m going to shower and sleep—”

“Skye,” his voice came out in warning.

I didn’t turn back. “What?”

Dots spotted my vision as I spun around. He stood at the threshold of my bedroom, crossing his arms, waiting for my reaction.

“What do you want?” I whispered, otherwise I’d scream.

Kurt looked still with anger, his muscled form overwhelming the doorway as he spoke slowly, “I found a card in your room.” My pulse pounded in my ears. “In your drawer. Do you know who it belonged to?”

I didn’t reply. My chest rose and fell, panic suddenly slamming into me.

He took a step into the room, his frame swallowing me whole as he repeated loudly, “DO YOU KNOW WHO IT BELONGED TO?”

I shook my head, unable to speak.

He’d found the card.

The card Hunter had on him when he came through the room—

“Jonah Walker is one of the Walker brothers, Skye,” Kurt growled, face red with rage. “They’re bad news from the city. They come around here, making deals with the Warlords—SKYE, HE’S DEAD!” His finger rose, pointing in my face as he hollered, “WHY DID YOU HAVE A DEAD MAN’S CARD IN YOUR FUCKING DRAWER?”

“Kurt,” my mother said, rushing into the room to grab at his arm. “Leave her alone—”
