Shane watched him with a note of concern as he finally found a tie. He sighed deeply, saying, “Leo, it doesn’t end here. Even if you make an ally out of Abram, you’re playing a very dangerous game. You will be entering a world you can’t come back from. A world that will have you securing relations that you may not want to have. Relations outside even the High Table. Are you certain this is the way?”
Leo paused as a brief feeling of panic flared through him. He had thought about this, too. There would be no going back, and he could have squirreled the money in Abram’s bank and lived a life outside the High Table. But what was he to do with that life? Live lavishly like the rich playboys he often crossed paths with?
Maybe, just maybe he would have considered this if he had Skye—
But he had Skye for half of the year now, and he needed to make something of himself with the other half. Heneededpurpose. Again, he needed to distance himself from himself, and in doing so, he needed to feel that part of him slowly die. He could revive it when he had Skye; she could easily breathe life back into him.
Letting out a quiet breath, he finally steeled himself and said, “I’m certain.”
“Then heed my warning,” Shane returned, conflicted. “You make a deal with the devil, prepare to become a demon. Abram will want something. He will make you pay, and it won’t be in dollars and cents, or gold and riches. It will be in blood.”
Shane was right.
