Unbroken 2 - Page 66

Hunter’s eyes zoned in on my mouth. “That upsets you.”

I shook my head. “No, it’s not that—it’s that…the longer I leave it, the more awkward it is when I eventually do, and they get really invasive, demanding what I’ve been up to.”

The realization struck him as he said, “You’re afraid of what they’ll think when they find out you’re here.”

I rolled my eyes, feeling stupid. “It’s silly, isn’t it? I shouldn’t care.”

“But you do.”

“Yes,” I admit. “I might…I might have to hold off from telling them.”

“Why?”

Was he serious? “You know why.” My voice dropped lower as I glanced around, painfully aware how crowded the pub was tonight. “They’ll worry about me.”

“You’re safer here.”

“They don’t know that—theycan’tknow that, either.” I didn’t want to give my folks a heart attack!

He went quiet for a few moments before replying, “I’d say being here is better than that trailer park. They’d be fucking cunts to turn their noses up at the club.”

I twisted my face. “You don’t have to be part of a trailer park to be against the club, Hunt.”

He raised his brows. “True. You could be like the Itanis, bunch of stuffy rich fucks—”

“The club has a reputation,” I cut in, pointedly. “Most people would disapprove.”

He just smiled, pulling out his carton of smokes. “Sorry I dragged you into this dump, Nugget—”

“I never said it was a dump.”

“Do you think if I put on a suit, people might think I’m not a violent thug?” He ripped open the carton and pulled out a cigarette, raising his brows expectantly at me, waiting for my answer.

I drummed my fingers along the table, narrowing my eyes at him. “Do you want to wear a suit?”

“If it makes you more comfortable to be seen with me—”

“That’s stupid,” I cut in. “I’m happy to be seen with you.”

“Then tell Kurt you’re here with me.”

I hesitated.

He grinned, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “What’s wrong, Skye?”

I felt my face heat, annoyed. “Why are you being like this?”

“Like what?”

“This.”

He lit up the smoke even though nobody was allowed to smoke in here, regarding me coolly. “What’sthis?”

“You know what.”

He shrugged one shoulder, taking a pull from his smoke before asking, “Did Kurt know you were with Leo all those months?”

Now I looked away, twisting around in my seat. “This isn’t about me not telling him I’m with you, Hunt—”
