Forty-Six
Skye
“Take me back!” I screamed, punching at his chest.
“No,” he growled, gripping me tightly around the arm as he shoved me back into my seat. I screamed, clawing at his jeans, his leather, his neck and face—
My head whipped to the side as he slapped my face suddenly. My cheek throbbed hotly, my brain felt scrambled as I sucked in a shocked breath, staring wide-eyed at the bastard.
“How fucking dare you,” I seethed, my voice scratched, pained. “How fucking dare you! YOU WILL TAKE ME BACK!”
“No,” he retorted as the car screeched down the roads, going in the direction of the clubhouse. “And watch your fucking hands! If you attack me, I will fucking hurt you, too.”
Angry tears flooded my eyes. The reality crashing down over me as I gulped for breath.
Jesse took his last breath in my arms as Hunter had tried his hardest to crawl to us, and then…then everything was a blur.
Commotion came from every direction. I felt like I’d lost my mind. My throat had hurt from screaming. And then strong arms came around me, forcing me up, forcing me out of the room, away from Jesse, from Hunter—
“Why are you doing this?” I demanded, trembling.
Miles wouldn’t look at me now as he barked at Faden. “How many have stayed behind?”
Faden’s grumble was quiet. “A handful.”
“Enough to fend off a threat?”
“Fuck if I know.”
I tried at the door again, determined to jump out of the car if I had to—
“Enough,” Miles growled at me. “It’s fucking locked—”
“I want you to let me go!”
“Believe me, nothing would satisfy me more than to watch you tumble out of this fucking car, princess.”
I felt defeated, the anger absent from my voice as I said, “So let me then. Because they’re going to go back and kill him, Miles, and if he goes, I have no reason to be alive, okay? Fucking let me die with him.”
Miles turned his frosty gaze at me. “He won’t die.”
“How do you know that?”
His teeth clenched. “They were afteryou.”
My body went still. “What?”
“George Itani has been trying to kill you for a while now.”
My hand let go of the handle as I fell back against the seat, looking at him for more answers. Miles didn’t say anything for some time, but he could sense my burning questions, the havoc that was radiating out of me.
“Been in the shadows too long because of you,” he said quietly now, sounding pissed. “Put off too many jobs just babysitting your princess ass. Watching those fucks circle arond you.”
“I never asked you to—”
“I had no choice,” he cut in, tossing another filthy look my way. “What do you think would happen if Hunter loses the only thing that’s keeping him fucking sane?”
My eyes are raw. “His mom is gone—”
