But you will one day.
“Anyway.” I smirked. “I came in here to tell you that I was going out for a while.”
Her playful expression shifted to a neutral expression. “Oh.”
Should I tell her?
I didn’t think she would want me to go. On the other side, I didn’t want to have too many secrets between us, not when I wanted her to trust me.
“I’m going to check on a lead with Wyatt.”
The worry increased. Her hands dropped from her hips. “Wait. What?”
“My friend has a new address for him.”
“Where?”
“Less than an hour away.”
Terror filled her eyes.
“Wyatt is with some woman named Selena. Do you know who that is?”
“No.” She shook her head. “But, regardless, I don’t want you to go there.”
“They’re going to the movies at ten. I was going to go by there and—”
“No. I’m serious. I don’t want you to do that. He’s dangerous.”
“I’m more dangerous.”
“Yoshiro, you can’t—”
“I’m an adult, Ebony. I’m going. I just thought you should know.”
“Oh my God.” She held both hands to her head. “No, Yoshiro. I really don’t want you to do this.”
“I’ll be back later tonight.”
“Wait.” She went over to the window. “What about the roads and snow. You can’t—”
“They’re ploughed around here. If they hit this area, then the highways will be more than fine. And it hasn’t snowed all day. Even if I got stuck, which I won’t—”
“Yoshiro, I don’t want you to do this.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t trust Wyatt. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
I smiled at her.
“Why do you have that expression on your face?”
“I like that you care about me.”
She opened her mouth and then closed it.
I handed her a sheet of paper. “My number is on it. Call me, if there’s a problem. I have no indication that he knows where you are, but just in case, I have my friend Kevin’s number on there too.”
“Goddman it.”
I quirked my brows, not used to hearing her curse.
Terror shown in her eyes. “How can I get you to stop?”
“A kiss,” I joked. “That would make me stay. It sure would distract me, but even that would probably make me rush out even more.”
“Why?”
“Because it would give me the burning desire to make sure he’s dead.”
“I don’t want this. I don’t want you going out and acting like Chuck Norris or something.”
“I’m more dangerous than Chuck Norris. I’m at least the Equalizer.”
“This isn’t funny.”
“Give me your phone.”
She frowned and walked over to the side of the bed. It gave me a nice view of her ass jiggling in those jeans.
I’ve got to get her a nice dress and see those legs. Maybe, take her out when the weather is even better. See if Mabel could babysit. Would Ebony trust Mabel to do it?
She grabbed the phone and returned. Anger covered her face.
I quirked my brows. “Are you mad with me?”
She said nothing and handed the device to me.
I took it, dialed my number, and called. Once my phone buzzed in my pocket, I hung up and gave it back to her. “Now, I have your number. When I’m heading back, I’ll call you.”
Glaring, she took the phone back.
I leaned my head to the side. “Ebony?”
“I can’t believe you’re going to do this.” Her voice grew shaky. “What if something happens to you?”
“Then, take care of my dogs.”
“You’re being an asshole.” Her bottom lip shivered.
I frowned and touched her hand. She was shaking. “Ebony, I’m going to be fine. They’ll be at the movies.”
“And what are you going to do, break into their place and what?”
“I’m winging it.”
“You shouldn’t wing it with Wyatt. He’s insane and violent and fucking dangerous.”
“I’m pretty bad myself.”
“Jesus Christ, Yoshiro. I’m being serious.”
I joked. “Are you going to give me a hug?”
To my surprise, she came to me, wrapped those delicate arms around my waist, and leaned her head against my chest. Her body trembled next to mine. Relishing in her warmth, I put my arms around her.
Fuck. I didn’t know she was really going to do it.
“Please, don’t go,” she whispered. “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
I kept my voice low. “Trust me, Ebony. I’m good at taking care of myself.”
“Let me go with you or—”
“No. You should be here with the kids.”
She left my arms and I hated it.
My body wanted her back. “I’ll call you, when I get ready to return. I promise.”
She glared at me again and didn’t say anything.
I ran my fingers through my hair, not liking that she was angry with me.
Maybe, I shouldn’t have told her until I came back. No, that probably would’ve pissed her off more. Better she’s mad that I told her the truth, then lied.
“I’ll be back soon.” I left the room.
Quietly, she followed.
We walked down the stairs.
When we got to the lower level, I had the team to deal with.
Kia looked up. “Mommy, what’s wrong?”
