“We can make that promise,” Finn says. I don’t want to make that promise, but I say yes, too, for the sake of compromise.
Gran nods her approval. “I’ll admit, this relationship between the two of you is unconventional. But after losing my son and staring down the barrel of my own life, I refuse to sweat the small stuff. Love and happiness are the only things that matter in the end. Do you love her, Finnegan?”

She looks at me. “And do you love him, Astrid?”
“More than anything.”
“And you’re happy about this pregnancy?”
“I am,” I tell her. “So happy.”
