“The code wouldn’t work from inside. I don’t know why,” she offers frantically.

“You’re going to have some major explaining to do missy,” the woman shakes her finger at Macy as we both thank her.

“I know, I’m so sorry. I can explain.”

“You don’t need to explain to me…you’re going to explain to Mr. Chestshire.”

I could tell from the context of the sentence he was obviously in charge.

“It was all my fault,” I offer and she scowls at me even harder.

Macy reaches across from me as if she’s asking me to stay quiet and grins a sorrow filled smile. She doesn’t think I can help and I feel terrible.

We follow the lady upstairs listening to her mumble under her breath about how wrong Macy was and what kind of trouble she’s going to be in. When we get to the top of the stairs, I place my hand on the small of her back hoping to ease her worries and let her know I’m here for her, but she gently pulls away.

“I think you should go Archer,” she whispers with a frown.

“But I want to help,” I insist.

She looks down at the floor and shakes her head, “You can’t help.”

“But I know I can…and last night…I want to-, that was-“

Her hand reaches between us landing on my chest this time, “Last night was last night. It’s gone now. Let’s just let things lie. You know we’re from different worlds Archer. Now please, just go.”

Her lips try to raise in a slight smile and she turns and walks away from me.

I watch the woman of my dreams walk away from me and meet the old lady behind the desk who is on the phone. I watch in complete horror realizing the words she just said to me and my stomach drops. I can’t live without this woman, but she doesn’t want me.

I don’t know what to do but I know that right now, she won’t let me do anything, and I have to leave. I slide my hands in my pockets and slowly walk across the vast space. I see the older woman hand Macy the cordless phone with a scowl on her face and just before Macy takes it she glances at me. I want to mouth something, anything to her, but she looks away before I can, and I continue out the door.
