Brown sugar and cinnamon, like someone had baked something delicious, wafted into the room and straight to my head. I sat up, cast aside the blanket, and tried to look like I hadn’t just been sitting here for the past eight hours.
“What are you doing?” Rhaef asked. He let out a low chuckle.
Before I could answer, Izzy was bursting in through the front door.
“Hey,” she said shyly as she rushed to my side.
“Hey,” I echoed back.
“I’m sorry I’m late, I just had to make sure that she was okay,” she explained. “She’s been through a lot.”
“So have you,” I murmured. Standing up, I took her hand and started walking out.
“Bye then, I guess.” Rhaef laughed behind me. I didn’t have time to be embarrassed or explain myself. I needed her to know how much I needed her. If I ever had to spend this much time apart from her again, not knowing if she was okay, I might explode.
It had been almost twenty-four hours.
I was crawling out of my skin about it.
She squeezed my hand and laughed as we rushed through the castle.
“Are you okay?” I asked gruffly. She was keeping up with my pace, jogging at my side.
“Yeah, I think so. I grabbed her and then we stayed in the car until Karr came back. We drove her back into town, paid for her husband’s care, and then gave them money for the repairs to her home. Insurance doesn’t really cover a dragon tearing through the place,” she snorted.
“Two dragons,” I reminded her.
“True.” She smiled.
We got to my suite, and before I even closed the door, she was kissing me. Taken aback, I hesitated before kissing her back. Izzy’s lips were so soft, so sweet. I wanted to get to know every plump curve of them and taste her smile again and again. She leaned back a little, and I begrudgingly let her end the kiss.
“I’m so glad you’re my mate,” she admitted. I felt my heart thud a little faster. “I didn’t understand how lucky I was to have you, someone so quick and willing to listen and change.”
“I shouldn’t have snatched you that day, I should have—”
“You’re right, you shouldn’t have.” She laughed. “It’s not okay, but I’m willing to move past it as long as you promise you’ll keep being open like this.”
I never expected her to be this kind.
So understanding.
I’d went into this wanting a mate, but I’d found a woman who deserved to be queen. She’d be fantastic one day. Crystal Glass was so fortunate to have her.
“I’d do anything for you,” I admitted.
