Ilet her finish her painting and enjoyed getting to watch her work again.
Mara’s hands were skilled and steady, making smooth motions that led to a very attractive advertisement for the company. I wasn’t sure why a pet washing company needed to exist or why they needed a painting to advertise, but I wasn’t going to question her.
She was gorgeous, and the taste of her lips... I was practicing a great deal of patience by not just flying her away at that moment and breeding her. I got to hold her hips, feel the heat of her body against mine, and somehow held back. I couldn’t promise I’d be able to hold back next time, but I hoped I wouldn’t be so far gone over a simple kiss again.
Her body had a siren call that made me want to taste and kiss every inch despite having more important things to do.
The sweets seemed to work.
Rhuron’s human said gifts and treats can make women outside of Crystal Glass more likely to be interested. I’d just combined that with the seer’s prophecies and somehow it had worked.
She drove us out of town, past the strangest businesses and companies, out to familiar trees and wildlife. I made her stop before the road ended, and we pulled over to a small park.
“I need to fly us from here,” I explained.
“Can’t I just follow you on foot? My shifted form is fast.”
I wasn’t sure why she had to push back on so many things I said, but this wasn’t the time to bring it up. She was going to finally come home with me. Willingly.
“You know these woods aren’t safe to go on foot,” I reminded her. These lands had been cursed so deeply that even after over a hundred years the air still stank with the magic. It separated my people from the main world. Now every interaction with the outside was made only if absolutely necessary.
“So, you’re going to carry me?” She sounded uncomfortable with it. I tried to think of how to ease her troubles. Every step was to save my kingdom; I needed to remember that. As fantastic as she was, sexy, beautiful, smart, I couldn’t forget that this was for more than us.
If I couldn’t breed her, then we’d lose another line of my family tree.
I needed her to need me.
For life.
“You can ride on my back if that’s more comfortable,” I offered. It was a degrading act that no royal should ever do, but she didn’t know that. For her I’d allow myself that embarrassment.
Her eyes dashed around the skyline, assessing the danger, so I pulled one of her hands in mine.
“I’ll keep low to the tree line, and if you need to stop, we can stop,” I said softly. Pressuring and willing my voice to be flat and even, I tried to reassure her. “I would rather die than let anything happen to you.”
I meant it.
The future of my family rested with her.
If I failed to secure her as a mate, I’d be the shame of my kingdom. Possibly on par with how they viewed Tierner. My anger rose at the thought of how badly he’d fucked up, but I tamped that down before she could notice.
I didn’t need her fearing me.
“Okay, I’ll do it.”
My stomach felt strange at her agreeing, and I had to remind myself this was just her agreeing to see my kingdom. She didn’t know about anything else that was going to be expected of her.
This wasn’t the time to tell her about any of it.
“Come here.” I held out my hand. She took it cautiously, and I pulled her knuckles to my lips. Her skin was smooth and silky, so warm. I could feel her quick pulse and could think of a dozen other ways I’d rather be raising her heartbeat.
Releasing her sweet hand, I started to undress.
It would be fine if I just shred through these clothes in my shift, but it was considered rude to waste well-tailored clothing.
