I paused, my arms falling uselessly by my sides. I spoke numbly, “We were going to try and mate with them.”

Mara looked over to the castle entrance, angrily sucking her lip.

“And were you ever going to tell me that? Why weren’t you honest with me?”

She was really rubbing in the guilt now. I’d lost all my concern for the photos, replacing it with a feeling of dread. I needed to know she wasn’t going to leave.

I wouldn’t be able to handle that.

“I was going to tell you—Iwas—after you and I made a connection. I didn’t want to scare you away before I could see if there was any truth to us being fated mates.”

“Oh great, so you made sure I’d really like you before you turned around and hurt me,” she snapped. “I want to go home.”

“I can fly you back if you—”

“No.” She shook her head. “I don’t want you flying me. Tell me which way to go and I can get there myself.”

“Please, don’t go. Let’s talk,” I urged, stepping towards her. She took a step back.

“Leave me alone. I’m going home.”

I watched her shift, running off down the hallway as a small quick fox. I wished I could know that part of her as well, but I knew I’d never get that chance. She was through with me.

She’d found out the truth.

In one foul swoop I’d lost a girl I cared about and knocked down my people’s chances of rebuilding our population.

I couldn’t get any lower.
