Mara

“Gran, just lay back.” I guided her into a large soft chair. She sat down slowly, folding her hands in her lap with a scowl stretched across her eyes.

“Is she okay?” the witch asked as she came in. She was wearing bright blue scrubs that matched her bright blue hair. “Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable?”

“She doesn’t trust doctors, sorry,” I said apologetically. “I know you’re going to do your best.”

“What’s been her symptoms?”

“Well, she’s had a couple different things: a really bad cough and her memory’s been terrible,” I explained. “Both are really declining, though.”

“My memory is fine,” Gran spat.

“Grandma, a few weeks ago, you told me my mom was going to visit,” I said softly. Her mouth lolled open, and then she closed it slowly.

“I did?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

She bit her lip, her eyes getting a little teary.

Pulling her against me, I hugged her as tight as I possibly could.

“Gran, I love you, we’re just trying to get you the best help we can.”

“Who’s paying for this?” She looked more scared than angry.

“Elderly care is free here,” the witch spoke up.

“Are you from Ember Abyss too?” I asked, thinking about what I was told earlier about random non-locals moving into Crystal Glass.

“I’m from Springfield,” she admitted. “I love calling this place home, though.” She aimed this at my Gran.

“Is it going to hurt?”

Gran reminded me of a kid somehow. Crouching down at her side, I took her hands. “I’m going to be here with you regardless. It’s going to be okay.”

There was a tap on the door, and when I looked up, I saw Simeth standing there awkwardly.

“Do you mind if I sit in with you?”

“Please come here, boy, I could use your luck,” Gran said. He took the hand that I wasn’t holding, and we kept eye contact for just a brief second. I didn’t want to thank him too much there or my gran would be embarrassed, but I hoped he knew how thankful for him I was.

“Alright, so I’m going to rub a little poultice across your chest,” the witch said as she pulled out a compound and a cotton swab.

“Alright,” Gran answered quickly.

Her hand was shivering in mine.

The witch did her work, spreading it on Gran’s neck and chest and chanting something to activate it.

As she did, it started to glow a neon pink.

I watched in awe as she worked and poured in whatever warm feelings I could into this treatment.

It had to work.
