“I guess that’s all I can hope for.” I grabbed a pillow and hit him in the face with it.

“It sounds so romantic,” Lilia said on Thursday afternoon as I was counting down the minutes until I could leave. Normally I wasn’t such a clock-watcher, but I was so looking forward to being alone with Lucah with no potential for someone to barge in on us when we were having sex.
“Yeah, well, it’s been a while since anyone was up there, so it’s probably infested with mice or raccoons and it’s going to be dusty and dirty and we’ll probably spend most of our time cleaning.” Still, it wouldn’t be awful. Lucah was bringing his guitar and I had visions of sitting by the fire pit eating s’mores as he serenaded me.
“You’re going to have a good time.” We went over what she was going to work on while I was gone and that she was only to contact me if there was an absolute emergency, which hopefully wouldn’t happen. I’d only be gone for one workday. There wasn’t anything that couldn’t keep until Monday.
Finally, the clock struck five and I almost ran from my office. Lilia gave me a wink as she gathered up her stuff and headed out. I heard the ding of the elevator and then a sexy redhead came around the corner, wearing a flannel shirt, his diamond ear stud and a pair of ripped blue jeans.
I nearly melted into a puddle of lust on the floor.
“Hello, Sunshine,” he said, adjusting the straps of the backpack he had slung over his shoulders.
“I thought we weren’t changing yet,” I said. Or at least I thought that’s what I said. He was making it hard to think.
“I decided to clock out early. I brought your stuff too, if you want to change now.” Opening the bag, he pulled out the clothes I’d packed to wear tonight. He must have gotten them out of my overnight bag this morning, the sneak.
“Why thank you,” I said, taking the stack of clothes from him and going to the bathroom. I stripped out of my work skirt and blouse and into a long-sleeved gray cotton shirt, jeans and a pair of scuffed boots that I’d had forever. I loved my heels, but they just weren’t right for the cabin.
Lucah whistled when I came out and I struck a pose.
“You look good enough to take fishing,” he said, taking my work clothes and sticking them back in his bag.
“Oh, don’t you two look perfect together,” Mrs. Andrews said as we walked by her desk to go downstairs where Lucah had his car.
We both thanked her and then hopped on the elevator.
“I’m excited to see this place,” Lucah said. I felt a tiny bit guilty about the cabin, but I wasn’t going to tell him about it. His childhood had been poor where mine had been full of trips and new clothes and fantastic birthday parties. It wasn’t my fault that my parents had money, but that didn’t stop the guilt from creeping in every time I was reminded of what I had that he didn’t.
“It’s not much,” I said. It really wasn’t. Compared to some of Dad’s friends’ places, it was downright rustic, and not in a Martha Stewart way. In a gross, pile of crap way.
“I still can’t get over the fact that Sloane’s not going to just walk in,” he said and I’d been thinking the same thing.
“It’s going to be weird. But at least they have Wi-Fi up there.” It was probably terrible, but I’d brought my laptop with me. Just in case.
“Well, thank God,” Lucah said with a wink.
“Shut up.”

We stopped a few times on our way up to get food, groceries for the cabin and gas.
“We have a stove, but there’s also a fire pit if we want to use it,” I said as I threw two bags of marshmallows in the cart at the grocery store.
“Nice. Do you have marshmallow sticks already?”
“No, Dad usually just went out and found something in the woods.” Once, when I was ten, he found a stick that was almost ten feet long and cooked his hotdogs while sitting inside the cabin with the stick out the window. I’d thought it was the funniest thing ever. Ah, youth.
I gave Lucah directions to get off the highway once we were well into Maine.
“Just about a half hour from here,” I said. We’d been listening to the radio and arguing about which station to pick since we’d had to search for new ones.
I was tired so I drank one of the energy drinks I’d bought at the grocery store to keep myself awake.
“Be careful with those things,” Lucah said. “Remember what happened last time.” I rolled my eyes. I got a little crazy on too much caffeine. I could drink coffee till the cows came home, but for some reason those energy drinks made me go crazy. I’d had one at work once and it had led to me sending a lot of insane emails and texting Lucah a bunch of stuff.
