For something that we prepared for, for months, the actual ceremony only took minutes. Taking pictures was the real challenge. Fortunately, I didn’t have to worry about remembering to smile. I couldn’t stop.

We took the obligatory silly bridesmaid pictures and Lucah took them with his brothers and Fin and then it was time to head to the reception in another vintage car.

I shook my head at Lucah, but he just kissed me and told me to enjoy it.

The next few hours were filled with toasts and food and drinking (sparkling cider on my part and booze on everyone else’s) and then it was time for our first dance. I’d let Lucah pick the song and when he told me what song he wanted, I knew it was perfect. He clasped me in his arms and told me how much he loved my second dress. The look on his face when I’d run to the bathroom with Sloane and come back in it was priceless.

“You are the Sunshine of My Life” sung by Frank Sinatra started to play and we swayed back and forth as Lucah sang in my ear over Frank. No offense to old blue eyes, but my man was better.

My husband.

“You’re my husband,” I said as we covered the dance floor.

“You’re my wife. And don’t forget BG.” How could I, on a day like today?

“When I start to show, I think that will be pretty impossible.” He held me closer and sighed the happiest, most contented sigh in the world.

“I love you so much, my Sunshine,” he said.

“Love you, too.”

The song ended, but we didn’t stop moving.

Epilogue

“I had dark hair when I was born too,” Lucah whispered over our new daughter’s perfect head. “And then it fell out and came back in red. Same with my brothers. So don’t lose hope yet.” I looked up at him and tried to smile, but I was too tired. Having a baby is no joke. They don’t call it labor for nothing.

“Well, she’s got your eyes right now and I hope that stays,” I said. She had eyes exactly the same blue jean color as her father. She was the most perfect baby in the history of the world and I would fight anyone who said otherwise.

The owner of said eyes was worn out from being born and was currently sleeping in my arms.

Lucah leaned down and kissed her head.

“You’re going to be a force to be reckoned with Evelyn Piper Clarke Blythe,” he said, stroking her head. She moved closer to his touch and made a face in her sleep. Clearly, she was thinking hard about something because she was a genius. She’d already smiled at only five hours old. Harvard was just around the corner.

“That she will. She’s going to set the world on fire,” I said. Our friends and family had come and gone, so it was just the three of us for the first time today.

“You think we can do this?” I asked him.

“We’re already doing it. Right now. We’ve got this,” he said with complete confidence. He kissed our daughter’s head again and went to get something out of the bag we’d brought with us to the hospital. He turned his back to me so I couldn’t see what it was and before I knew what was happening, he had gently stuck a yellow note on our daughter’s head.

OURS.
