Broken Hill Hearts (Broken Hill High 4) - Page 53

Tora – xx

I put my phone back down on my bedside table and plug it into the charger, even though the power is out. It will most likely come back on during some point of the night and when it does, I’m going to want my phone to charge.

As Nate had suggested, I make my way around my room, blowing out all the candles. Though, I leave the ones on my bedside table for last, you know, because dashing across my room in complete darkness terrifies me. At least this way I can climb onto my bed and lean across to blow the candles out. No monsters under my bed will be grabbing my feet tonight. Those suckers. I get the best of them every damn time.

I squish my face into my pillow and do my best to pull my blanket up as my mind wanders to Nate and my hallucinogenic ambulance ride. I still can’t believe he finally came around. It’s been nearly three months without him and I absolutely hated it. I know I spent most of that time still with him, but it didn’t feel right. It felt forced like we were living some kind of lie. But now, it feels just like it’s supposed to feel. It’s magical and I’ve never been so bummed that there’s a stupid storm keeping us apart.

Chapter 16

I don’t know how or even remember falling asleep, but the next thing I know, my mother is crouched down beside my bed as dull sunshine streams in through my window. “Honey,” she says, placing a hand on my shoulder and gently rocking. “Wake up.”

I groan into the morning and bring my hand up to rub against my eye. The heavy cast instantly falls against my face, both stinging my arm and face. “Shit,” I groan. I forgot about that in my sleep. I won’t be making that mistake again.

“Oh, honey,” mom says, trying desperately to smother her chuckles. “Are you alright?”

“Fine,” I grunt, not too impressed with how my day has started. I use my other hand to help wriggle me up my bed and prop myself up against the headboard. “What’s going on?”

“I was just coming to let you know all the schools are closed. The storm caused a bit of damage so they’re taking the day to put things back together.”

“Really?” I ask. “What kind of damage?”

“I’m not too sure,” she says. “I’d assume maybe a few trees are down or there’s trash and debris everywhere.”

I nod my head as the curiosity gets the best of me. I throw my blanket back and climb out of bed before trudging over to the window. I open my blinds to find my long driveway covered in debris and tree branches. Damn. I guess it could have been worse. I’m sure dad will just hire a gardener to come out and clean it all up.

I step back from the window and turn to face mom. “How does it look out there?” she questions.

“Not too bad, actually.”

“Oh, good. I was too scared to check,” she sighs in relief. “Why don’t you get yourself showered and ready for the day? We can have a movie day together.”

“Ok,” I smile. “I couldn’t think of anything better.”

“Excellent,” she says. “I’ll go and get breakfast started.”

“K,” I grumble as I head into my bathroom. I manage to get myself undressed and before I know it, the warm water is cascading down my body and making me feel like a whole new person. Though, I probably should have checked if I can get my cast wet before I got in because standing with my arm out of the water kind of hurts. I’ll be better prepared tomorrow.

I get out of the shower and get myself dried up before waltzing into my closet. It’s going to be another good day. I know the circumstances suck, but a whole day for me and mom to lounge around like couch potatoes, I couldn’t think of anything better.

Rifling through my clothes, I spot my favorite ripped jeans and grin. Perfect. I start pulling them on and somehow manage to get them up and over my ass, but buttoning the button is another task in itself. I simply can’t do it. I let out a huff and leave the jeans undone as I find a top to throw on.

I grab my phone off my bedside table, pleased to see that the power must have come on during the night as my phone is fully charged. I look down at my phone as I make my way down the stairs and find a few texts that must have come through when I was in the shower.

Brylee – Hope you’re feeling better today. A group of us are heading to school to help with the clean-up. Are you in? I’d understand if your arm is too sore.
