“It was uncomplicated.” I gave him a sideways glance. “I’d think you of all people would understand that.” Sullivan’s marriage had started out as a business arrangement, with the intention of being an “uncomplicated” situation. Then he fell in love with his wife and it got messy real fast. Not that he was complaining.

“Point taken.” He refocused on our wives as they slowly made their way back toward us. “I appreciate your willingness to stay tonight, Miles. But I suggest you get out of here and do damage control. Don’t worry about the event, I’ve got it covered.”

Emma’s expression was still blank, and I hated how closed off it made her. I sighed and gave Sullivan a chin lift before twining my fingers with Emma’s and leading her to the exit.

“Did you get what you wanted from Kinsley?” I asked as I helped her into the car. She settled on the bench seat at the farthest corner and stared out the window.

“Yes.”

Frowning, I slid in behind her but remained a few inches away, giving her some space. As the car slowly pulled into traffic, my frustration grew until I couldn’t take it any longer. I grabbed her by the waist and hauled her over to me and onto my lap.

“I know you’re mad and hurt, Emma. I’m going to explain everything. But we are married and having a baby. I won’t allow you to put distance between us after we’ve worked so hard to grow close.”

Her head reared back slightly, but I caught her chin and covered her mouth with mine. I devoured her lips and tongue, letting my desire overwhelm her. When she melted in my arms, I finally, albeit reluctantly, separated.

“We were made for each other,” I rasped. “And when we get home, I’m going to prove it to you. Over and over until you have no doubts, because I don’t have a single one.” My tone was a little harsher than I intended, but I wasn’t about to let anything pull us apart.

Though she was in a bit of a daze from our kisses, the words seemed to penetrate, and her green eyes widened. Her mouth opened and closed a few times, seemingly at a loss for words.

“I grew up with nothing,” I started. “My mother and I shifted around from crappy apartments to crappy hotels, even living in our car from time to time. But she kept me in school and I excelled at my studies, particularly math and anything computer-related.”

The car rolled to a stop, interrupting me, and I paused the story to get us into the house. Keeping a firm grip on her hand, I headed straight for our bedroom. Once there, I immediately began to undress her.

“Whoa!” she exclaimed, trying to step back. “What are you doing?”

“I’m baring everything inside me, Emma. And while I do that, I don’t want anything physically between us.”

“B—but,” she stammered. I pulled her in close and slammed my mouth down over hers, cutting off whatever she’d been about to say.

By the time I tore my lips from hers, her gown was pooled around her feet, along with her bra, and I’d pulled all the pins from her hair, so it hung wild and curly.

“As I was saying.” I resumed my explanation as I continued to remove her clothing, stopping only to place kisses along the soft skin I uncovered. Paying particular attention to her round, heavy tits and rosy nipples. “My mother died when I was sixteen, and I was thrown into the system.” She let out a tiny moan when I pulled her panties down and placed tiny kisses along her pelvis. “Focus, sweetheart.”

“You’re not exactly making it easy for me.”

I fucking loved that even when she was angry, I had the power to make her react to me physically. If it was any other situation, I’d put all my effort into it eliciting more of those moans. But not after I’d made her feel as though I didn’t trust her. First, I needed to open up to her about my past so I could prove to her that she had all my trust…and then I could show her with my body.

“My foster parents were in it for the money, and they didn’t spend a dime of what they received from the state on their foster kids. When one of the other kids in the house ended up in the hospital because they didn’t have a winter coat or decent shoes, I’d had enough. I hacked their bank account and set up a money trail that made it clear they were spending the money on booze and drugs. It didn’t take long for them to get busted, and all of us were moved to different homes.”

She was fully divested of clothing at this point, so I picked her up and gently laid her on the bed. Then I removed my tux jacket and went to work on the buttons of my shirt. Emma’s gaze jumped back and forth between my eyes and my chest.
