'By the way, Mother,' Alan began, 'go right ahead and plan that engagement party. As soon as possible too. Ebony and I are getting married as quickly as the law allows.'

Now Deirdre could not hide her surprise, or her smugness. 'Is there—er—- some reason for the hurry?'

'We're not sure yet, but better safe than sorry, wouldn't you say?'

'Yes, indeed. Next weekend for the party, then? I'll organise everything.' She clapped her hands excitedly. 'Oh, how exciting. I'll go tell Bob and Bill. They'll be tickled pink. Then I'll ring Vicki and...'

She was still bubbling away as she left the room, after which Alan turned to draw Ebony into his arms, kissing her resoundingly. She pulled back at last, laughing with soft surprise at this new and rather shameless Alan. He didn't even seem to mind who knew what they'd been up to all weekend.

'Your mother was pleased,' she said.

'Who wouldn't be, having a daughter-in-law like you?'
