I grab her hands and hold them in mine as I stare into her eyes. “Enough. I’m not mad at you at all. It’s not your fault; he’s a douchebag, but I’m going to have a talk with Emmitt about his choices in friends.”
Chapter 13
Tanner
Emmitt and Madison just returned from their honeymoon, so we’ve all gathered for a family dinner like we normally do, but this time it’s with both our women. Damn a week from now, Addison will be mine and no one will separate us.
“So Emmitt, I need you to do me a favor. Be my best man.”
His eyes and mouth open wide. He sets down his bottle of beer. “I can’t believe you want me to be your best man after everything that’s happened.”
I have no other options and I know no one better for the job. I may not show it, but I’ve always thought of Emmitt as my sidekick growing up even though we were worlds apart. College had been hard and there was Emmitt, still in high school, helping me get through my days.
“Emmitt, you’re my best friend and you always have been. We’re brothers even if it’s not by blood. Things got crazy at the wedding and maybe I should have mentioned it before.”
“Why didn’t you? You never called her out even when she was being a total cunt and earned your vengeance.”
“I wanted to many times, but I was afraid it would cost me you. We’ve been so close and well, I don’t make friends. You know it as well as I do. I didn’t want to lose that bond because she’s your mother. I don’t have my mother and it’s a pain that stuck with me all these years.”
“It’s better to have a good mother gone too soon than a sick, twisted mother destroying lives.”
“I suppose you have a point there.”
Emmitt takes a long drink from his beer. Once he’s done I can see that he’s about to say something, but he opens and closes his mouth twice. He shakes his head and finally chokes out the words. “Tell me, did she ever…never mind I don’t want to know.”
I know what he’s asking. It’s a big part of why I never wanted to tell him. It’s a lot to handle and especially for a child to hear about their parent. “Spying on me in the shower was the most she’d ever done. It’s fucking terrible and when I think about it, it grosses me out and it’s why I lock the bathroom door when I shower. Thankfully, Addison changed me.” Fuck, I love when Addison watches me from the doorway. It’s super sexy and tempting.
“For the good.”
“And you found her for me,” I remind him. I never would have found her on my own. Damn, thinking about it sends a pain through my chest.
“Ah, so that makes me qualified for the best man position.”
“You got that right.” He throws his arms around me for a hug. I hug him back because I’m so grateful that he’s my best man and brother.
“How about we hunt down our women and join them for some food?”
“I could go for a steak right now.” My stomach rumbles, but really I want to find my woman and worship her body with my hands and mouth. We walk out of my father’s office after our talk and I feel relieved. It’s one less thing on my mind.
As we step into the kitchen, the girls are giggling and dipping Oreos into milk. “Aren’t we about to eat dinner?” Emmitt loves steak and never lets snacks get in the way of him polishing off every last bite.
“Says the man who likes his dessert twice,” Madison tells Emmitt. From the blush on his face, it’s not real food she’s referring to.
“I happen to love dessert,” I growl, grabbing Addison around the waist and crushing my lips to hers. “How about dinner and then we go to bed early?”
“I’m game,” she whispers, brushing her lips against mine.
That night we made love for two hours before finally taking a breather to talk. “So I had a talk with Madison about the incident at her wedding.”
“I’m glad we’re having this conversation after we had sex.” She punches me in the arm and then kisses that spot even though I didn’t even feel her little jab.
“She wanted to tell me about why she jumped to conclusions.”
“It seems that for the past twenty-four hours before the wedding the bitch had been filling Madison’s head with doubt. She told her that Emmitt had been dating a model that he invited to the wedding and she ‘accidentally’ sent her a message with a link. It was about a bride finding out at the wedding that her groom had been sleeping with the maid of honor.”
“She still should have trusted you.”
