Boss Next Door - Page 9

“Don’t you have work today?” she asks me with a cocked eyebrow. “I don’t want to make you late. We slept in.”

“I can go in a little later.” I give her a one shouldered shrug. “I have a great boss.”

“You do?” Her eyes widen in surprise. “One who lets you pick your own hours? Wow, you must be important to the company. I certainly don’t recall that being on offer for any of the jobs that I applied for.”

I need to change the subject quickly before I end up saying something too revealing. I don’t even want to mention that I am the boss of my company because it scrapes too close to the truth. “So, when do you start work?””

“Tomorrow.” A shiver of excitement runs down her spine. “Which doesn’t give me much time to get all unpacked. I was thinking that I would have last night as well, but I got a little…distracted.”

She smirks and I can’t resist leaning across the table to kiss her gently. How on earth could she think that I would run out on her when we have this kind of chemistry? It’s so intense it makes my head spin. I would have to be absolutely insane to even believe that I could walk away from this woman. Luckily, I don’t even want to try.

Ring, ring… Ring, ring… Ring, ring…

Unfortunately, before our kiss can turn to anything more, which I’m sure it was just about to, my cell phone blasts out and ruins the moment for both of us. Serena snaps away from me, and I know that I have no choice but to answer it. Knowing my luck, it will be someone from the office, proving that they can’t cope without me.

I quickly find out that I am right as well. My personal assistant, Caroline, needs me because there has been some sort of breach with the IT system and she’s worried that it might affect the security of everything. Unfortunately, this isn’t the sort of thing that I can ignore just because I want to spend more time with Serena.

“I’m sorry,” I tell the red haired beauty with regret. “I just need to pop in to the office.”

“Ah, your hours aren’t so flexible after all,” she laughs. “You go ahead. Come back later, if you like.”

I’m sure that she must know for certain that I will be back tonight. I can’t get enough of her. But for now all I can do is give her one last lingering kiss with a promise of what is to come later…

Nerves zig zag through me as I stand outside Serena’s door once more, waiting for her to answer. She is the only woman to make me feel anxious in years, which I’m sure is a sign that I’m already in too deep. But all I really want to do is dig in deeper, find out more and see what this could end up becoming…

“Hey.” As soon as the doors swings open, any anxiousness to the nerves dissipates. Thank goodness Serena looks happy to see. All those hours spent sorting out the office drama were torturous only because I couldn’t be with her. It felt like wasted time. “Good to see you again, Will. How was your work?”

I follow her inside her apartment to the smell of cooking food. It has a deliciously mouthwatering scent to it that immediately makes my stomach growl with starvation. I concentrate so much on the food smell that it takes me a couple of moments to notice that there is paper work everywhere, Serena has been working on something.

“What’s going on here?” I ask her curiously. “It looks like you have been so busy…”

“Oh right.” In a hurry, Serena gathers up all of her papers and puts them to one side, then letting me notice how much unpacking she has done as well. I guess that I being called in to work was good for her. “Yes, I have. See, I start my new job tomorrow and I have been doing some research into the company. I want to be prepared, to know everything that I can. I know that I will still be on the edge and unsure of a lot of things, but it’s a start.”

“Wow…” I’m impressed by her. It would be nice if some of my future employees did the same thing. I found that a lot of them were totally clueless when they started. I had tried speaking to HR about it, but they said that people have to apply for so many jobs all at once and that is to be expected. It’s hard to keep track. Since I don’t know what it’s like being in the job market, I try to understand, but seeing Serena changes things a lot. She is giving it her everything, making sure that she will be the best employee that she can be. But I can’t congratulate her the way I want to because I haven’t let slip about owning my own business yet. That’s something I will do when the time is right.
