But I wasn’t ready yet to say everything was perfect or that I had everything I wanted. There was one more thing I needed, and that was going to happen soon. I’d already started looking for the perfect ring for Kelly. I knew she couldn’t wear one on her hand while she was working. It was too dangerous and could cause serious injury if she caught it on one of the machines. But I still wanted her to have the absolute perfect engagement ring and decided I would get her a chain to go with it. That way she could wear it around her neck when she was working in the garage, then put it on her hand when she wasn’t.
It wasn’t going to be a total surprise. We’d been talking about marriage, so I knew she was going to say yes. We both wanted to have a solid, stable home for Willa. That didn’t stop me from wanting to plan an incredible proposal that would show her just how much I loved her and how excited I was to have her as my wife. I planned on returning the note to her, telling her it had been my good-luck charm all along, but now that she was back, I didn’t need it anymore.
I couldn’t wait to see the look on her face when I asked her and to talk about everything. Our wedding. Our honeymoon. Maybe even trying for another baby. But I figured all that should wait until after Merry gave birth, which would be any day now. There was no need to steal her thunder.
On her first morning living in the house, I lay beside Kelly and gazed down at her. She was so beautiful, and I felt so utterly at ease with her. It was a sense of wholeness and happiness I never thought I would experience. I couldn’t believe I could be that content with my life. Three years before when I was so shy and unsure, I never could have imagined Kelly would become everything to me. Now I was so glad I found her. And so glad the Universe decided we deserved a second chance. This time, I wasn’t letting go.
