Nixie glanced down at her dangling feet, studying the sparkling black flats. “Payless,” she practically whispered.
The reporter looked absolutely pleased. “So down to earth.”
Nick swept her inside, avoiding any other questions. “What happened to the twelve-hundred-dollar designer boots I bought you for tonight?” he asked, slightly amused.
“The heels were pretty high. I was afraid I’d trip and make myself look like a klutz.”
With a chuckle, Nick planted her carefully on the floor. “Ah, Nixie. I do love you.”
“I love you, too.” She murmured the confession against his lips an instant before he kissed her.
Nick pulled back and stared at her very seriously. “Nix…” Taking a deep breath, he pressed on. “I was being honest a couple months ago, when I said I wanted you to marry me.”
Nixie felt a goofy grin spread across her face. “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah.” He smiled back and ran his thumb along her bottom lip. “You said you’d think about it. Have you come to a decision? Will you marry me?”
Nixie squealed and wrapped him into a fierce hug. “Of course I will!”
“So,” Nick whispered, pulling her into a gentle kiss. “Want to have sex to celebrate?”
“Here?” Nixie couldn’t hide her disbelief. “Now?” On his nod, she said, “Nicholas Morgan, you are insatiable!”
He growled in delight. “I do believe so, but I’ll give you the next sixty-some years to test that theory.”
With a smile, Nixie pulled him toward a small janitor’s closet. “I’d better start collecting data as soon as possible. “It’s a very important project, full of many tests and experiments.”
The closet door closed behind them, sealing them in as Nick fingered the small, heart-shaped locket around her neck. “Experiment away.” Then his lips captured hers.
