That didn’t mean I wouldn’t try. “It’s just the fact that he questioned my algorithm all because he only has two topics of conversation, his wealth and how he expertly manages his wealth. He’s a pompous jerk, and I’m no quitter which means he’s not going anywhere. Not soon, anyway.” Which actually was a problem, because I usually liked all of our clients, even the ones who came across as sleazy at the beginning. Usually they revealed themselves to be nice people once they get comfortable and sincerely confident. “I was thinking that we need to step up our game where Magnus is concerned.”
Thankfully, Eva threw me a bone. “Should I set about scouring the earth for a woman who only cares about money?”
Her sarcasm wasn’t lost on me, but stil I nodded. “That would be great, actually.”
Olive managed to shake off her concern and finish her bite before she nodded and jumped in, excited for the challenge. “We can do a special mixer just for him, bring in single women in search of a wealthy man? If they don’t like Magnus, maybe we can sign them up for our services?”
“I like the way you think, Olive. I think pregnancy is doing more than making your hair look extra fabulous.” It was impressively shiny, and I was beyond envious.
“Thanks, Soph.” Her hand went to her hair, a subconscious gesture that accompanied the blush on her cheeks.
Eventually talk turned back to Time for Love’s other clients and I was grateful. At least I was until my thoughts wandered right back to my bathroom. And my best friend. Dammit. “Eva, any wedding news?”
Her gray eyes blinked and looked at me in confusion and I knew, instantly, I’d missed part of the conversation. “Yeah, we were just talking about you going with me to look at dresses, and Olive planning the tasteful bridal shower.” The way she said tasteful told me it was her mother’s idea.
I laughed. “And then a real bachelorette party with just the girls?”
Eva smiled and gave a short nod. “Which I hope you will plan, but not as a Worthington. No offense.”
“None taken. I’ll make sure it’s worthy of your naughty standards, Eva.” It would not only give me something to do, but it was a great place to channel this energy created by an image my mind couldn’t seem to erase.
“Now that we’ve gotten all the new business out of the way, tell us what’s going on with you. Saturday you were weird, and today you’re weirder, which is, well weird for you.”
I shook my head and stood. Not ready to talk about it since the whole damn town already had the wrong idea about me and Stone. “Nothing. Just preoccupied,” I said.
“With work,” they finished simultaneously.
“Neat trick. You girls should take that show on the road.” Their laughter sounded behind me as I rushed from the conference room before they could ask more questions I couldn’t answer.Stone“Hey Ma! Where are you?”
Stepping inside the long, L-shaped ranch home I’d grown up in always felt like a time warp, even though a few changes had been made over the years. The same bluish-gray carpeting slipped under my feet as I walked inside and kicked off my shoes before she reminded me.
“In the kitchen, hon!” I could hear the smile in her voice as I made my way through the living room with the dated brown and gold furniture that was as comfortable today as it was back in the day. “This is a nice surprise! What are you doing here?”
I dropped a kiss on her cheek and lifted her petite frame, giving it a good squeeze. Maggie Lawson might have a few more pounds than she’d like, but she was still beautiful to me. “Came to see my best girl and get a few things done. How are you?”
“Better now. What things are you here to get done?” Her suspicious tone was at odds with her rosy cheeks, which gave her a youthful look despite the strands of silver shooting through her brown hair. “Well, out with it boy.”
I sighed and took a step back, out of swatting distance, because Ma was an excellent swatter. And despite being just over five feet tall, she had impressive reach.
“The bulbs above the front and back door are blown, probably the side door too,” I told her with arched brows, smiling when she looked away guiltily. “The faucet is leaking in the main bathroom, and the lock on the laundry room door is broken.” There were a few other things that needed to be done, but she was a proud woman, so I’d just take care of those without her knowledge.
“You’re a good boy, Stone. I don’t need you to fix things for me, but if it gets you over here, I’m happy to see you.”
