I was the luckiest man in the world. I had the wife of my dreams, the most amazing daughter in the world, and now I was holding my son as my two girls lay curled up on our bed, fast asleep. We’d only just got Jose to the hospital in time, and then she’d pushed my son, Jack Mason Beauregard, into the world. He was the same size and weight that his sister had been, and he was a force to be reckoned with as he screamed his tiny ass off. We’d decided on Jack because of the photograph of the two of us that had won the competition. If it hadn’t been for the Piersville Pirate Festival, that photo wouldn’t have turned out the way it had. Now that she was over how she looked in it, Jose saw it for the beauty that it was, and it was all thanks to that festival. And who was the most famous pirate we could think of? Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of The Caribbean.
“Is he ok?” Jose whispered, pulling my attention away from where I’d been memorizing his features, just like I’d done two years ago when I’d held Liv for the first time, too. “He’s perfect.” No other words needed to be said, because those two covered everything. Seeing that Liv had curled into her mom and that my side of the bed was now empty, I got up and put him in the portable cot and climbed in. The cot had been something I’d found online and had soft mesh sides, one of which folded down so that when you pulled it right up to the side of your bed, you could touch and see the baby with nothing in the way. Making sure it was overlapping the mattress slightly, I lay on my back, resting one hand on Jack’s back, and stretching the other across my two girls. I didn’t mean to, but I fell asleep almost immediately, with my entire world under both of my hands.
