I look at him, but he keeps his eyes on the driveway until he brings the Suburban to a stop. He finally gives me his attention. With a smile, he gestures through the windshield at the cabin. “What do you think?”
I slowly turn, scanning the house. It’s not overly grand in scale, but it’s certainly big enough to house us with room for expansion. “It’s beautiful.”
“I’m sure glad you think so because I already bought it,” he says, and I snap my head in his direction.
“You already bought it?”
“For us,” he clarifies.
“But we’re fine in the apartment,” I say sincerely. “I don’t need all this.”
“Do you need this?” he asks slyly, then he’s holding out a black jewelry box so it’s hovering in front of my face.
I blink at it stupidly as he pops it open. Inside is a beautiful diamond engagement ring. I’m absolutely dazzled not by the jewelry, but by the significance of this moment.
My eyes search his, heart thundering when he asks, “Will you marry me, Joslyn? Make my life complete? Be my wife and give me babies? I’ll even buy you a dog.”
I’d always wondered if I’d be speechless or have a ready answer when this moment came.
That is not a curiosity any longer. I throw myself at him, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck. “The answer is yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.”
Kynan squeezes me hard, pressing into my neck. We stay like that a long moment, but then he’s pushing me away and pulling the ring out of the box.
It’s stunning. A round-cut diamond, several carats in size, surrounded by smaller diamonds on the outside as well as along the band. It’s classic and elegant, and I couldn’t have picked anything more perfect.
Kynan’s hands are trembling as he slides the ring on my finger, then he pulls it up to his mouth so he can kiss it.
He regards me with so much love on his face I’m humbled. “You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me. I know we can’t get that twelve years back. But, frankly, I don’t want them. You and I became who we are because we were apart, and I love you even more today than I did back then. I cannot wait to move forward through the rest of this life with you by my side, Joslyn.”
Of course, tears come to my eyes. I start to sniffle. I’ve never been as elegant in spontaneous conversation as this suave Brit, but I speak from my heart.
“My soul is so full right now, Kynan. It actually kind of hurts because it’s so full of you. And yet, I don’t want to feel any other way. I cannot wait to marry you—to get pregnant and raise children together.”
Kynan smiles before tipping his head to place his lips upon mine. It’s the sweetest, most promising kiss I’ve ever felt in my life. I have to wonder how I got to be as lucky as I am, but I’ll have the rest of my life with Kynan to figure it out.
