“Yeah, but not a lot of people know she does, so I’d appreciate it if you’d keep the information on the lowdown.” His tone carries a hard edge.

“Of course,” I say. “I get it.”

“Good.” He gives a pause. “Can Zhara talk to Alexis? She’s been trying to call her but she won’t answer her phone.”

“Right now Alexis is… asleep,” I say then quickly give him a recap of what happened with the guy tranquilizing her. “I’ll have her call Zhara as soon as she can.”

“She’s okay, though, right?” he double checks.

“I swear she is,” I tell him. “Trust me, if she wasn’t, I wouldn’t be here talking to you. I’d be beating the shit out of the person who hurt her.”

I mean what I say too. If anyone so much as hurts Alexis, they’re going to pay big time.

Zhara

“She’s all right, though?” I ask Benton after he gives me an update on Alexis.

I still can’t believe she’s now involved in this world.

Everything’s changing.

“She’s fine,” he promises me, wrapping an arm around my shoulder. We’re sitting in his living room, on the sofa, waiting for the rest of the guys to return from missions. Well, except Jett. He’s taking a nap in the bedroom.

“Is there some way I can get a hold of her?” I ask. “Because she still won’t answer my texts.”

“She’s probably busy with all of this shit going on.” He pauses, mulling over something. “I’ll tell you what. How about I drive you to the training pit to do some training and then we’ll stop at West’s on the way back so you can talk to her?”

I nod, feeling a tad bit better. “Thanks, Benton.” Then, acting on pure instinct, I lean in and give him a hug. “For everything.”

He momentarily tenses but almost instantly hugs me back. When we finally pull away, he lightly brushes his lips against mine. The contact sends a shudder through my body and I blush, knowing he felt it.

A smile rises his lips as he leans forward and touches his lips to mine. Then he gets to his feet and offers me his hand.

“You ready for this?” he teases. “Because things might get a little intense.”

I nod and take his hand. “I trust you.”

For a moment, I swear he flinches. But then his smile returns, he pulls me to my feet, and steers me toward the front door. I follow him easily, hoping upon hoping, I’m not making a mistake.
