Play With Fire (The Men of Fire 1) - Page 68

It was go, go, go, all day. The second we had one situation sorted, we were instantly called out of the next. We haven’t had a chance to sit down in over 24-hours and now that we are, all I can think about is going home to my girls.

But I had to go and promise the boys that we’d go out for a few drinks to unwind. Don’t get me wrong, I fucking love chilling with my boys like this, especially after the kind of shift we’ve suffered through. Call me old fashioned, but nights like these are good for the soul.

Our new round of beers is placed down at the table, and the waitress does everything she can to attract Jet’s attention. Truth be told, his head has been down in his phone since the second our shift ended.

I’m almost positive he’s flooding Zoey’s phone with texts, but then, it’s also very possible that he’s been watching Pornhub under the table.

The waitress disappears, and Chief gets back to his almighty speech about being present in my child's life, even if Jessa makes it difficult.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I agree with him. He repeats himself over and over again, making sure I understand his message.

Chief and his younger sister were raised by a single mother who struggled through all the hard times and continued struggling through the good. He tells me all the time what a difference a father figure would have had in his life, so it’s clear that the whole topic is something he’s passionate about. But he has no reason to fear. My child will never go without.

Jet’s head snaps up from his phone with a cheesy as fuck grin as he looks at me. “The girls are just pulling up.”

What the fuck is he talking about? Ax’s brows furrow as he looks at Jet from across the table. “What girls?” he questions, just as confused as the rest of us.

“Zoey and Amelia.”

“No shit?” I grin as Jet nods. I wonder how the fuck Amelia was able to pull something like that? It’s not as though she’d ever bring the girls to a place like this. In fact, I don’t think she’s ever considered stepping foot into a bar like this herself. It’s not exactly known for its sparkling reputation. After all, it’s owned by the Black Widows Motorcycle club.

The door of the bar opens, and sure enough, Amelia and Zoey come striding in. And as always, Amelia knocks the fucking breath out of me.

I find myself standing as Jet rambles on about what he promised Zoey to get her to actually come out tonight.

I walk across the bar with Amelia’s eyes on mine, and with every step we each take, her eyes seem to shine brighter and brighter. As I reach her, I can’t help but slide my arm around her waist. “What the hell are you doing here?” I ask, bending to place a kiss on her warm cheek.

Amelia has the nerve to look outraged. “Don’t tell me you’re not happy to see me?” she gasps, horrified, teasing me the best way she knows how.

“Fuck off, Angel,” I laugh, pulling her in even tighter. “You know damn well that I’m over the fucking moon to see you. I just wasn’t expecting you, is all. What did you do with Ryan and Coby?”

“Oh,” she shrugs. “They’re just out waiting in the car, but it’s fine. I gave them some snacks and cracked a window. One of those biker guys offered to watch them for me.”

I roll my eyes, knowing she’s joking. She’d never do such a thing to her girls. “The fuck?” Jet demands, walking up behind me with disgust in his eyes as he looks at my woman, clearly not knowing she’s joking.

“Chill out,” Zoey says, taking him in. “The girls are fine. They’re with their father.”

Jet visibly relaxes and attempts to step into Zoey as I look down at Amelia with a raised brow. The girls being with their father is definitely news to me. “Bryce?” I question.

Amelia rolls her eyes as she lets out a frustrated little sigh. “Yeah, he called late this afternoon wanting to take them for the night. Apparently, he has some kind of family emergency with his mom, and she was asking to see the girls.”

“Really?” I grunt. “And you bought that shit?”

“No, not really. If anything, his mom just got a papercut and now thinks she’s dying. She’s lovely and all, but she has a flair for the dramatics. Who am I to say no, though? She’s the girls only living grandmother, and they have the right to visit with her. As much as I despise their father, his mom was always great with them.”

I place another kiss at her temple as Jet drags Zoey away, probably back to our table or to the offices out back to screw her senseless. “As long as you’re sure. Just say the word, and I’ll go around there and get your babies back.”
