She washes her hands and turns. “Yep, Jason likes to eat healthy, so you will too.”

I want to argue, but since I’ve never had anything like this before, I take a small bite.

A burst of butter and fluffy egg melts in my mouth and makes me look up at her.

“This is delicious.” I swallow. “If this is healthy then I want it every day.” I pluck a large piece of broccoli and nibble on it. “This”—I point at my plate so that I don’t talk with food in my mouth—“this omelet is a whole lot different from the ones I’ve had at IHOP.” I smile at her.

She cocks her head. “I’m going to the store. Is there anything you need or like?”

I take a sip of the coffee and groan at the fresh bitter flavor.

“Eve?” I open my eyes and see Amy smiling at me. “Anything?”

“No, this is the best breakfast I’ve ever had. I completely trust you.” She seems to like that answer.

“I’ll turn on some music out by the pool. Jason wants me to remind you not to go in the water.” She grabs her purse and list and is out the door before I can say something I might regret.

Does he think I’m stupid? God, he does. He insinuated it earlier when I was terrified of his penis. Picking up my plate, I wash it. My eyes take in Amy’s kitchen. She wasn’t kidding when she said everything is perfect. It literally shines in here. Even the large glass window is spotless—there’s not a speck of dirt on it. I can see all the way to the end of the grass yard and where the gravel starts toward the front. Looking down at my hands, I use the pink sponge to wash my plate. I’ve never been ashamed of myself or where I came from. Maybe because everyone I was around came from the same place. But with Blade, he has this way of making me feel inferior or dumb. I mean, I know he’s older and obviously smart, but I’m smart too. Just because I didn’t go to school doesn’t mean I don’t have what it takes to survive.

Turning off the water, I spin around trying to find something to dry my hands on. My eyes land on two perfectly folded floral dish towels. Biting my lip, I dry my hands on my cheap dress rather than messing anything up. I open the sliding glass doors and step out into the beautiful sunny day. As I gaze up at the blue skies for a second, I let all my crap go and make my way toward the pool. With a deep breath, I smell flowers and chlorine. Strangely enough I love it. I’m so caught up in my shit I almost scream. A couple is passed out on a couple of lounge chairs to my right. The bright sun looks like it’s burning them up. But hey, it’s none of my business. I grab a lounge chair with a striped red pillow and drag it to the other side. Wishing I had thought to bring a towel, I look down at the pale blue water of the pool and hope Blade follows through and teaches me how to swim. The water looks refreshing. I pull off my dress, settle back into the cushions, and try to relax, listening to the pop music Amy turned on for me.

“God.” My hands slap the cushions as I shoot the couple a dirty look. I can’t relax with them there. I need to think about what has happened to me, create a new plan. Also, they’re going to be in a world of pain if they stay out here much longer.

I get up and walk over to them. The woman seems smart enough to turn her face into the cushion so only her legs and arms are red. The man on the other hand…

“Excuse me.” I kick at him. He’s fat and his beard is huge. Sprawled out on his back, he snores loudly, reminding me of Pedro. His black T-shirt and leather cut seem to be inviting the sun to bake him. Shaking my head, I acknowledge I need to get another knife. These guys can’t be trusted.

“Hey.” I kick at the lounge chair again. Nothing but another loud snore. I look at the woman. Much like the guy, she’s heavy and her dress is not covering much.

“Hello?” I give her a little shake. She groans and flops to her stomach almost rolling off the lounger. The sun makes her blink and curse as she sits up.

“Who the fuck are you?” she snarls as she covers her eyes.

I don’t answer her but point at her man or whatever he is to her. “He’s getting burned to a crisp.” Walking back to my lounge chair. I hear her scream at the man. He stands up, tells her to fuck off, and throws himself fully clothed into the pool.
