“Bullshit aside,” Scott says, “I’m not fond of either of you.” He nods to Connor. “You’re the biggest prick I’ve ever met, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of distinguished people.” His disgusting eyes land on me. “And you’re the most stuck-up rich bitch I’ve ever had to pretend to be in love with.” Before I can sling an insult, he adds, “But I’m not here to fight you. I’m here to work with you.”
My nose flares. “I wouldn’t work with you if it was the key to saving my life.” I’d die. I would without a doubt die before I placed Scott anywhere on my team.
He ignores my statement. “Things have changed since Princesses of Philly.” He hesitates for a moment, choosing his words carefully. His gaze flits to the stone steps. The winter chill wraps me tighter than Connor’s arms, the hairs rising on my neck.
I wonder if he means the sex tapes or if he’s referring to my daughter.
“Not enough that we’d ever need you,” Connor tells him. “So explain to me why you need us.” We’re in the driver’s seat then. I place my hand on Connor’s, the one that rests on my shoulder, his arm across my collar.
“Don’t kid yourself,” he says. “I could sell another sex tape and get one-point-five million right now.”
“That’s it?” Connor’s brows rise. “That’s not even a fraction of what this mansion costs. And didn’t you buy a forty-million-dollar yacht?”
Scott’s lips stretch in a stiff smile. “I have expensive tastes.”
He needs more money, more than selling our sex tapes can give him, clearly.
“Thankfully I’m not fronting the cash for this house. GBA is.”
My stomach curdles. Global Broadcasting Association has the rights to anything we ever film on network television. They aired Princesses of Philly in a coveted primetime slot with high ratings, and ever since my sister and I were pregnant, they’ve repeatedly called Lily, Loren, Connor and me—to air a new season.
With our children.
“We can both win here. I sign you on for Princesses of Philly, task you with a brand new executive producer, and GBA gives me a high-ranked position at the network. I never have to see you.”
“You want us to launch your career?” I sneer. GBA is stooping so low, digging at dirt and chucking it in our faces, just for more ratings. They used to be the number one network with the female demographic, but when our reality show went off air, ABC beat them the subsequent quarters.
“There’s no benefit for us,” Connor tells him.
“I’ll sell the rights to the sex tapes back to you,” Scott says. My heart skips. “GBA is offering me something long-term that I need to sustain my lifestyle. The tapes aren’t lucrative past the number I have.”
“And how many do you have left?” Connor questions, on a very logical path while I continue to draw devil horns over Scott and shake violently.
As much as I want those sex tapes back in our possession, I’d never trade them at my daughter’s expense. I won’t expose Jane to invasive cameras for an indefinite amount of time.
“That’s for me to know,” Scott says, straightening up in the middle of the door frame. “I’m going to be in your way until you agree to this. I want your daughter on camera and whatever other little brats you squeeze out.”
I lunge forward, and Connor grips me tighter. I begin to yell, my throat raw. I scream profanities and curses, my voice bloodied with serious threats. “You will never have her!”
Connor pulls me down to the third stair to leave, but I hang onto the iron banister, not ready. “You son of a bitch,” I cry. “You can take my fucking life, but you can’t take away theirs!”
Scott watches without flinching, my heart pouring onto the stone when I wanted, so badly, to crush his, right here.
“Rose,” Connor whispers in the pit of my ear.
“No,” I choke. He has to know that we won’t stand for this any longer—that we’ll destroy him some way, somehow, before he ruins all that we’ve built. He’s chaos, and I want him gone.
“Connor!” Loren yells. He races up the circular driveway, his legs pumping quickly, Ryke by his side, both only in drawstring pants, not wasting time with clothes. Behind them in the distance, the second-floor of our house glows, the windows illuminated. Even with these volatile emotions mauling my head, I deduce that the brothers heard us leave and spotted us at the neighboring house from the window.
Then they chased after us when my screams split the night.
Scott lets out a weak laugh. “Where’s the other two: the whore and the hot one?” He extends his arms. “Might as well make this a reunion.”
“Go fuck yourself,” Ryke growls before I can unleash hell. I try rushing the steps, but Connor pulls me down to where the two guys stand.
Scott laughs again and rolls his eyes at the sky. “I’m not looking forward to dealing with you again, trust me.”
I suddenly feel a long woolen coat on my shoulders, Ryke placing it there. He brought my coat out to me? I stick my arms through the holes as though he’s given me battle armor. “Let’s go,” I say, heatedly stepping forward not backward.
Connor pulls me into his chest again. “Not tonight, Rose.”
Hot, pissed-off tears cloud my vision. “We can’t let him stay here, Connor.”
“Wait—this shitty fuck is living here?” Lo points a threatening finger at Scott.
He smiles a gross smile. “Hello, neighbor.”
Ryke breathes heavily and shakes his head at Connor. “I said I would put in money if you needed to outbid the seller.”
“We didn’t even know they closed the deal,” Connor says. “GBA bought it out from under us.”
“GBA?” Lo stands eerily rigid, staring at the cement for a long moment.
I wrap my hands around the railing, still searing holes all along Scott’s California tan.
“It’s simple,” Scott tells the two brothers. “GBA wants a season two of Princesses of Philly, this time revolving around your kids. They need you, and you’ve spent years avoiding their phone calls. Now they’re prepared to take greater actions. I’m just one of them.”
In a slow wave, Lo’s dark, malicious eyes lift off the driveway and pin murderously on Scott. “I get it. GBA has decided to break every goddamn contract they have with Hale Co. because they didn’t get what they want. That’s it, isn’t it? You’re all planning to make our lives harder until I put my kid under a larger spotlight.”
Scott doesn’t deny their low tactics. “GBA will work with Hale Co. again when filming for the show begins.”
“You motherfucker!” Ryke storms the stairs, and Connor releases me to push him back. Ryke points hostilely over Connor’s shoulder. “Stay out of my brother’s fucking life, you sack of shit!”
I approve of Ryke’s methods, even if Connor shoots me a commanding look to stand down, to return home with him. In this moment, I choose to align myself with the antagonistic, volatile people that share the same heat in my blood.
Scott cocks his head at Ryke. “Would you rather I toyed with your life? The network would love to put you back on air. The statutory rapist.” Lies. Gross, repulsive lies.
Ryke lunges, and Connor pushes him forcefully off the stone steps for the umpteenth time. I begin to remove my flip-flops.
Lo barrels forward, beside me now. Connor has trouble containing the three of us. He decides to bar Ryke from the four stairs and let Loren and I go.
My ragged, heavy breath smokes the cold air, and I chuck each flip-flop at Scott’s head. He blocks one with his forearm, but the second rubber sole connects with his cheek. He nearly laughs when he rests his putrid eyes on my body.
“You look at me,” Lo grits, clamping his teeth, his jaw a razorblade.
Scott peels his eyes off my face and onto Lo. “I have a bottle of Jameson—”
“It’s your loss, coming here,” Lo cuts him short. “By the end of this, the four of us are going to bury you so quickly, you’re going to beg for a goddamn shov
el.” He rises one more stair, his face in line with Scott’s. “And no one will dig out a worthless piece of shit like you.”
Loren Hale just declared war.
He doesn’t wait for Scott to flinch. He steps down and puts his hand on my shoulder, forcing me to turn around with him.
“Wait,” I begin.
“No,” Connor and Lo say in unison.
I glare, my legs trembling again. I could ball my hands into fists. “I’m not finished, Richard.”
“You’ve all said more than enough tonight.” Connor’s jaw muscles constrict, his shoulders stiff. He’s pissed, not at me, but he’s having trouble imprisoning his anger. I realize he’s bottling it in order to restrain the three of us.
Ryke walks backwards slowly. Like me, he struggles to allow Scott to stand there so smugly.
“Tell Daisy I said hi.” Scott pokes at another sensitive place for Ryke and me. I fling around, bare-footed on a dirty driveway with furious eyes. Connor holds me around the waist. Lo has his hand on Ryke’s shoulder.
Scott says, “I bet she would’ve fucked me if I came onto her stronger.”
Ryke is quiet, the darkest expression sweeping his face.
“No? You don’t think so?” Scott smiles again. “You might not know this, but Trent, a great friend of mine from L.A., came to New York to photograph some models. I believe Daisy just turned eighteen around then. Trent fucked her. Right in the ass.”
I’m going to maul him dead. I swear to God, he’s going to die by my raging hands.
“Fuck you, you fucking fuck!” Ryke yells, thrashing against Connor’s stronghold.
