“I wanted to make sure you didn’t hurl.”

“Ugh! First you disappear for hours and then you . . . ugh!”

He pulled me against him and kissed me hard and fast. I wanted to smack him. Well, almost as much as I wanted to climb him like a tree. The man was enormous!

“Don’t do that! I’m mad at you!”

He kissed me again, this time for a lot longer. I tried to resist him, by but the end I was kissing him back. I squealed when his big hands reached down and squeezed my ass.

“Cain!”

“What?”

He was smiling at me, not letting go.

“You disappeared! I was worried!”

“I had stuff to do.”

“Stuff?”

“Yes. Stuff.”

He kissed me again but he didn’t let go.

“That is not an acceptable answer! Not with . . . you-know-who out there doing God-knows-what!”

“I know. I’m sorry.” He glanced around, looking surprised. “What is that delicious smell?”

“Nothing.”

He cocked an eyebrow at me.

“Kelly . . .”

“Fine! I cooked! I cooked my heart out.”

He smiled, his hands rubbing my ass. I did my best not to purr like a cat. He was way too forward, just going for my butt like that. But somehow, I didn’t mind his fondling. There was something so possessive about the way he manhandled me. I kinda liked it.

I kinda loved it.

“What did you make?”

“Everything.”

“What?”

“Whatever was in there, I cooked it.” I poked his chest. “I was stress cooking. Because someone went MIA for half the day!”

He started laughing.

“Show me.”

I grumbled but led him into the kitchen. I had tried to clean but it was still kind of chaotic. There were at least five dishes of food covered in tin foil. Some of them were still steaming.

I’d made rice pilaf. Pasta primavera. A veggie stew. A meat stew. Grilled veggies.

But that wasn’t all.

I’d also baked. There were the brownies. Two different kinds, one from a mix and another I’d tried to improvise.

Cain looked at me in shock.

“I guess I got carried away a little.” I chewed the inside of my cheek. “Are you mad?”

He shook his head slowly.

“I’m in awe. This is enough to feed my whole squad.”

“Yeah . . . I sort of started and couldn’t stop. I have so many ideas, Cain.”

“You are amazing and I can’t wait to try them all.” He pulled me against him. “But maybe we can make plates for the guys outside first.”

I nodded, feeling oddly lifted that he wanted to eat my cooking.

“I was thinking that.”

“Well, I’ve been thinking too.”

He pulled out a box and stared at it. Then he lowered himself to one knee. My heart seemed to stop and then start pounding fast and hard.

What was he doing? Oh, my God, WHAT WAS HE DOING?

“I don’t want to wait. I want to marry you now.”

“What?”

“Will you marry me, Kelly?”

I stared at him, completely taken off guard.

“I know it’s not all that romantic, but I love you, woman. That’s not going to change. I want to grow old with you.”

“Old? I’m barely twenty-one!”

“Don’t worry, I’ll get old first.”

He was still kneeling. Still holding out the box.

“I want to see it.”

He cocked an eyebrow at me.

“Does your answer depend on the ring?”

“No! I mean, my answer is yes. I will marry you. But I still want to see it!”

He was laughing as he opened the box. I sighed dreamily. It was perfect. A rounded square diamond in a simple white-gold band. The solitaire was surrounded by smaller diamonds. It wasn’t huge but it wasn’t small either.

“Oh, Cain . . .” I clutched my hands against my chest. “It’s perfect!”

He stood up and took my hand, sliding the ring onto it. Then he kissed me. I couldn’t stop smiling. I leaned back and stared at my hand.

“Now I’m going to have to get my nails done.”

He laughed.

“Okay. We have forty-eight hours to get ready.”

“Ready for what?”

“The wedding.”

My jaw dropped.

“What?”

“We are getting married. You said yes, remember?” He squeezed me tightly. “You can’t back out now,” he teased.

“What the hell, Cain! I can’t get ready in forty-eight hours! Especially on lockdown!” I pushed him away and started pacing. “Plus, how are we getting married, anyway? Where can we even go?”

He grabbed me and lifted me up in the air. Then he kissed me again.

“It’s taken care of. All of it.”

“It is? How?”

“Yes. We are leaving town. Tomorrow.”

“What?”

“Trust me, baby girl.”

I threw my hands up in exasperation.

“But . . . I’m a girl, Cain! I’m supposed to plan all this. Little girls think about their weddings all their lives!”

“Did you do that, Princess?”

I chewed my lip.

“Not really. Not until you.”

“It’s going to be very romantic, I promise.”

I sighed. He really was being sweet. But I was still reeling from the engagement. Now he wanted to get married in two freaking days!

I had an idea though. Turnabout was fair play. Maybe if I agreed to this, he would agree to a little bit of revenge on my part.
