He slit their throats; he took their lives, and now he stands before me laughing.

No, he will not get away with this. I promised to seek justice and deliver punishment accordingly, but when it comes to my parents, nothing is quite as just as an eye for an eye. The music begins to fade at the end of the song, and I know I only have a few seconds before he walks away.

My hand slips into the hidden pockets of my mother’s silk gown and my fingers curl around the hilt of the old diamond-encrusted dagger that I’d stolen from the dais. I yank it out of my pocket and without a second of hesitation, I slam the sharp blade up through Mr. Carver’s stomach with every ounce of my strength, pushing it up between his ribs, and knowing without a doubt that I’ve pierced his lung.

His eyes widen as he lets out a deep groan, his hand falling to his stomach. “Wha—”

“I hope you rot in the deepest pits of hell,” I tell him, yanking out the dagger and letting the blood pour from his wound.

The dagger falls to the marble floor, clattering almost in slow motion, and gaining the attention of everybody in the room.

The people around me begin screaming as I stand still, not able to move, needing to watch every last second of his downfall. Mr. Carver begins to crumble, the blood pouring out of him in waves.

A trickle comes from the corner of his mouth, and as he meets my eyes, he drops to the ground and I find Carver standing right behind him, his eyes wide and glued to mine, having watched every last second.

I suck in a gasp, realizing what the fuck I’ve just done.

Rage burns within Carver’s deadly stare, and I see the exact same resolve that I had—an eye for an eye. My heart races as fear begins to rock through me, then in a flash of murderous fury, Carver comes for me as a terrified squeal tears from between my lips.
