He shakes his head and tries to kiss me again. “I can wait.”
I duck my head. “I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a daddy. I have a trucker’s hat that says Daddy on it wrapped up at home, but I figure you gave me a good present, I didn’t want you to have to wait.”
He’s staring back at me, his mouth wide open, no doubt in shock. “A baby. We’re having a baby?”
So overcome with emotion because I can see how happy he is, I just shake my head.
He clenches his eyes shut and opens them, a fresh tear falling. “We’re having a baby.”
I take my thumb and wipe away the moisture from his cheek. “Good present?”
He lifts me up and sets me atop his desk. “The best. The very best. I know I don’t deserve you, Jane. But I’m going to be the best husband to you and the best daddy to all our kids. Thank you. You’ve given me everything I can ever want.”
I kiss him and lean in to whisper, “Now, about the second part of my present?”
“But the baby?” he asks, running his hand across my stomach.
“It’s safe. You’d never hurt us.”
He nods and then continues to make the sweetest love to me.
