She holds an envelope out to me, and it has me asking, “What’s this? It better not be a resignation letter.”
Dorris lets out a chuckle. “Ryker would die without me. It’s my RSVP for the wedding.”
“Oh, right.” I take it from her and opening it, I check to see if she’s coming. “Oooh, is that a plus one I see?”
She lifts her chin into the air, and as she begins to walk away, she says, “I got myself a fine-looking man.”
“I can’t wait to meet him,” I call after her.
When I turn back, Christopher is leaning against the doorjamb between our offices. There’s a smile tugging at his lips.
“Dorris and her plus one are coming to the wedding,” I tell him as I walk back to my desk.
When I sit down, and Christopher doesn’t say anything or move, I ask, “Do you need something?”
He shakes his head. “I’m just looking at my sexy fiancée being a powerhouse businesswoman.”
I let out a chuckle as I flip my hair over my shoulder. “You know me, Miss Independent.”
He lets out a chuckle. “Only for four more months. Then you’re Mrs. Hayes.”
Emotions wash over me, and jumping up from my chair, I grab hold of his arm and pull him into his office. I shut the door, and then taking hold of his jaw, I crush my mouth against his.
Christopher quickly takes control of the kiss as he pushes me toward the round table. Lifting me, he sets me down on the marble surface as he steps between my legs.
His teeth and lips work my mouth into a tingling mess, and when he finally pulls back, we’re both gasping for air.
When I catch my breath, I say, “This feels familiar.”
His mouth curves up as he stares into my eyes. “It feels like a lifetime has passed since we kissed in here for the first time.”
“It’s only been two months,” I laugh.
“Damn, I need to get to work,” he mutters. When I try to slide off the table, he shakes his head. “I mean on getting you pregnant.”
Laughter explodes over my lips, but it quickly dies away as he walks to the door, locking it. My gaze follows him to the desk, where he calls Cody. “Hold all my calls.”
Then he turns back to me as he begins to unfasten his pants.
Epilogue
CHRISTOPHER
A week before the wedding…
After going for a fitting to make sure the tuxedo is perfect, I head home.
Walking into the penthouse, I call out, “Dash?” When she doesn’t answer me, I head up the stairs to the second floor.
I hear Dash cough, and then it sounds like she’s throwing up. Darting forward, I rush into the bathroom. “Hey, are you sick?” I ask as I crouch beside her, gathering her hair.
She shakes her head as she tears some toilet paper off to wipe her mouth, and then she smiles. “Can you run to the store?”
“Sure. Gatorade? Meds?”
She shakes her head again. “A pregnancy test.”
I freeze for a moment as her request sinks in, and then a smile forms on my face. “You think you’re pregnant?”
She nods as she gets up. “I just want confirmation, but I’m pretty sure I am.”
“Be right back.” As I head to the store, all I can think of is that Dash might be carrying my child… our child.
God, please.
I get a box with three tests and rush back home. This better not be the stomach flu.
I find Dash where she’s sitting on the bed, her hand on her stomach. “Got them.”
She gets up, and taking the boxes, she darts into the bathroom. I stand by the door and wait, and then it suddenly hits again.
Dash could be pregnant.
Lifting my hand to my hair, I grab a fistful. I hear the toilet flush, and then the door opens. “And?” I ask, impatient to know.
Dash lets out a chuckle. “This one’s yours.” She hands me a test. “It should show in a couple of minutes.”
We both stand with a test in our hands, my eyes glued to the screen. “What will it –” My sentence cuts off as the words pregnant show on the screen. “Dash,” I whisper as my breaths begin to speed up. “Dash!” I grab hold of her shoulder and yank her closer. “You’re pregnant.”
When she still says nothing, I glance at her, and seeing the tears, I drop the test and wrap my arms around her.
I can feel the relief coming off her in waves as she cries against my chest.
“You’re carrying our child,” I whisper in awe.
Nodding, she sputters, “We’re going to have a baby.”
Framing her face with my hands, I force her head up, and then I press a hard kiss to her lips. When our eyes lock, I let out a silent burst of laughter.
This moment. Right now. God, I’ve never been happier, and it’s all because of Dash.
