“Show me,” he said, and then he went absolutely still at the feel of cold steel against his belly.
He inhaled sharply, instinct making him try to press his gut against his backbone, but the kiss of the steel went with him.
The woman in his arms smiled. Then she put her lips to his ear.
“I’ve got a knife pressed to your belly,” she said in a voice as soft as a lover’s caress. “You make a stupid move, Mr. Knight, I swear I’ll use it.”
CHAPTER FOUR
HIS reaction was everything she’d hoped for.
Pocketing the little nail file had been sheer good luck. She’d snatched it when she was being dressed for her meeting with the sultan, slipped it down her thong for the moment she could use it, and now that moment had come.
When Knight sucked in his belly, as if he could somehow put distance between himself and the sharp tip, she almost wept with joy. This was the first thing that had gone right.
She’d made one bad decision after another, underestimating Asaad, underestimating his horrid visitor…
And underestimating her reaction to what had just gone on in this bed.
Knight had tied her down. Touched her. Kissed her. She’d fought, struggled, done everything she could to keep him off her…
And then—and then, something had changed. Her terror had been lost in a rising tide of heat. His hands on her breasts, his taste on her mouth…
Never mind all that.
The tables were turned. She had a weapon and its sharp tip was right where she wanted it. The balance of power had changed. And it was damned well going to stay that way.
When she felt him start to shift his weight, Leanna countered by putting a little more pressure on the file.
“Don’t do anything stupid,” she whispered.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
His voice was soft. She knew he was keeping it down so anybody with an ear pressed to the door wouldn’t grow suspicious.
“I’m pressing the point of a very sharp knife to your stomach, Mr. Knight. Don’t give me reason to use it.”
“Just take it easy, okay? Stay nice and calm and tell me what you want me to do.”
“I want you t
o get off me.”
“Sure. No problem. You just— Hey! Take it easy with that blade.”
“Don’t try to buy me off, Mr. Knight. I want you off me, and then I want you to get me out of this place.”
“Fine. Give me the knife and we’ll talk about it.”
She almost laughed. Did he think she was stupid? Do what he’d asked and he’d tie her up before she had time to blink. Then he’d punish her for what she’d done. His powerful body would press her down into the mattress. He’d kiss her until she whimpered for mercy…until her treacherous body melted under his touch as it had before.
Anger at him, at herself, at the fact that nothing made sense, turned her voice cold.
“There’s nothing to talk about. Do what I want or I’ll slide this blade right between your ribs.”
“Is this the knife you tried to use on Asaad?”
“Exactly.”
