Carver just smirks as though he’s a hero, but I don’t miss the jealousy pulsing through his sharp gaze. I was fucking right, he’s as jealous as they come, but just because he saved my ass and is not being a stubborn asshole, doesn’t mean that he gets to have me.
Carver turns and walks out of the room, leaving nothing but a heaviness behind. The mood is completely gone, and Grayson quickly backs away, almost as though he’s embarrassed to have been caught dipping his fingers into the honey pot. “I, uhh … I’ve got shit to get done anyway.”
I roll my eyes. “I don’t need your excuses,” I tell him. “Just go.”
Without another word, Grayson turns his back and strides right out of the living room and back through the kitchen. I watch him for a second and can’t help but notice how he makes a left and takes himself toward the gym, probably hoping to work me out of his system.
I fall into the couch beside Cruz and his hand instantly comes down on my thigh. “You okay?” he grumbles just moments before a throat clears in the room behind us.
The three of us whip around to find Tobias King standing in the main entrance of the living room and I gape at him, my heart racing. Fuck me, had Carver not interrupted us, my father’s closest friend would have walked in on me mid gang bang.
What are the fucking chances?
King instantly flies to his feet. “Dad,” he grunts, the relief in his tone screaming louder than anything I’ve ever heard. “What’s going on? Is everything okay?”
“Hunter,” he says, nodding all too formally toward his son, making me wonder when the last time they actually spoke was. That’s not exactly the way a father would greet a son who he sees every day at home, but then, this world isn’t exactly classified as normal. “Nothing is the matter. I have a few spare hours and thought now is a suitable time to take Elodie for her induction. There is a lot she has to learn, and had she not wasted her last few days in our cells, she would have already been properly trained in her role.”
My brows shoot up as I get to my feet beside his devilishly attractive son. “Oh, umm … are you sure? I wouldn’t want to be a nuisance.”
“Positive, he says. “Have you completed all of your schoolwork?”
“I—” I pause. I don’t think I’ve ever had an adult ask me if I’d completed my homework before. I nod. “Everything is up to date.”
“Good. Hurry along then, we have a lot to cover.”
I glance back at King and he nods, silently reminding me that I can trust him, and after receiving a proud smile from Cruz, who adjusts the front of his jeans with a cringe, I hurry around the side of the couch to meet with Tobias King.
The second I stand at his side, he turns, and I follow him out of the living room as I hear Cruz burst into howling laughter behind us. “Fuck dude, that was far too close for my liking.”
“You’re telling me,” King responds in a hushed tone, followed by the sound of him dropping down onto the couch, most likely in his favorite spot with his feet up on the coffee table. “Can you imagine if he’d walked in to see that shit?”
Cruz snickers at the thought, and as Tobias looks down at me, my cheeks flush the brightest shade of red, but I don’t dare meet his stare. How could I, knowing that not two minutes ago, I was about to let his son rail me until I was unconscious?
Fuck me. That really was a close call.
I keep my mouth shut and just keep walking, acting as though I haven’t got a clue what the boys are talking about until Tobias’ curious stare finally slides back to the front door.
We walk in silence until the soft afternoon rain is falling around me. Tobias offers me his elbow as we descend the grand stairs, and despite being more than capable of handling the stairs on my own, I find my hand slipping around his arm.
It’s probably just an age thing. Tobias would have been raised in wealth as the perfect gentleman, and despite being anything but a lady, I appreciate the gesture. Though, I don’t know where he went wrong with his son, because Hunter King is anything but a gentleman.
We reach his car at the bottom of the drive, and as he holds the door open, it hits me. Carver would have received notification of him coming through the gate.
That fucker. He knew Tobias was coming and he came to break up the party so his friends didn’t get caught fucking the same chick.
Screw him. Why does he keep trying to save me? I clearly don’t deserve it, but on top of that, there’s a massive part of him that can’t stand to be around me. It doesn’t make sense.
