The Doctor Who Has No Closure (Soulless 10)

He walked in a moment later, in his blue scrubs with a deep V in the front, which showed a great view of his chest if you looked at the right times. When things were hectic in the middle of the week, he was a lot quieter and more withdrawn, juggling so many things at once in that brilliant brain of his. So, when he didn’t say a word to me and took a seat at his desk, I didn’t take it personally.
I got him a green smoothie from his favorite juice bar, along with an entire feast of food—tortilla soup, Cobb salad, and a black bean hummus wrap, along with a coffee if he wanted it.
He immediately started to eat, scarfing everything down like he was starving after being in the OR for eight hours. He took a bite of his soup, inhaled his salad, then went for the smoothie.
I sat with my device and looked through the rest of his schedule, knowing he would talk to me when he was ready to talk.
A knock sounded on the door before it opened. “Dr. Hamilton—”
“Dr. Hamilton is unavailable right now.” I rose to my feet and approached the door, blocking Dex from view. I had no idea who this person was. He was a man in green scrubs, but I didn’t recognize him, so I assumed it wasn’t important. “You can come back in fifteen minutes if you still want to speak to him. And if you ever barge into his office like that again, I’ll make your life a living hell. You understand me?”
The guy was obviously shocked that I spoke to him that way, but he didn’t say a word. He made the right decision and walked off.
I shut the door but didn’t lock it because locking it would seem suspicious, especially if people knew we were inside. I turned back to the chair near his desk.
He continued to eat, but this time, he looked at me like he was grateful that I had his back. “You’re one hell of a guard dog.”
“You were just on your feet for eight hours.” I looked back down at my tablet. “You deserve at least fifteen minutes to yourself. When you give and give, people take and take. Pisses me off sometimes.” I turned quiet, so he could enjoy his food in peace.
“Pretty hot.”
My eyes flicked back up to look at him.
He gave a slight grin as he chewed his bite, his eyes both affectionate and playful.
“I’m definitely protective of you.”
“That’s sexy, baby.” He pulled his soup closer and took a few more bites. “My family knows about us.”
I liked it when he called me baby. It made me feel like I was his without his even touching me. It made me feel special because no one else in the world called me that and he didn’t call anyone else that. “You told them?”
He finished his bite before he answered. “Well, kinda. I went to my parents’ place to pay them back for the apartment, and instead of putting the check on the table, I accidentally put my test results there. I realized my mistake quickly and pocketed it before there was any real chance for either of them to read it, but my dad has a photographic memory, so all he needs is one second.”
“Oh my god…how mortifying.”
He shrugged. “I don’t really care that much. My dad told me he was promiscuous when he was my age. I mean, we don’t sit around and swap stories or anything, but he gets it. But he cornered me about it and basically assumed I was monogamous with someone if I got tested, and I confirmed that suspicion.”
“Oh. And his reaction?”
“Come on, baby. He was thrilled. My parents love you.”
If I’d met Dex first and then was introduced to his super-successful, super-brilliant, super family, I would have been so intimidated I would have made an idiot out of myself, but thankfully I got to know Cleo before I even really got to know Dex. Having their approval was a blessing, because I wasn’t good enough for their son, frankly. And I knew I wasn’t. “That’s so sweet because I love them too.”
“And then my sister was telling me you have the nicest tits in the world and I should get a move on, so I just told her.”
I chuckled because she was the most candid person ever. “I love your sister.”
“Really?” he asked incredulously. “You don’t care that she asked me if I’d hit that?”
I laughed again. “No. She’s this brilliant, beautiful doctor, but instead of being stuck-up and snobby, she’s positive and complimentary. She speaks her mind, and the only thing that’s in her mind is nice things. I think that’s really cool.”
“Well, I’m glad you aren’t offended.”
“Honestly, if a woman likes my boobs, that’s a bigger compliment than if a guy says it.”
