I took a sip of my wine and pondered what he was saying. It couldn’t be easy having been kicked out of the only home you had known for years. Suddenly he had no money and only Daniel for company.

“Well, I could always use a friend. I don’t have many.”

“Cool,” he said. It made him sound so young. I had forgotten he was only twenty-one. Yes, I was only three years older but in terms of maturity, it felt like more. Poor Parker was entering a learning curve right now that was for sure.

The table was already set, but Parker jumped up and grabbed the salad. I followed his lead and brought the basket of bread over. Daniel joined us dropping the mac and cheese onto a mat in the center of the table. It smelled divine.

“Ladies first.” Daniel nodded at the mac and cheese.

I loaded my plate adding some salad and bread. When I bit into the mac and cheese the taste was sensational. I moaned as the flavors hit my tongue.

I pointed at my mouth while I was still chewing, “Daniel, this is so good.” I said, my mouth still half full.

He looked a little taken aback, maybe no one ever complimented him on his cooking.

“I’m finding it a little hot,” Parker said. “What about you, Dan?”

“I’ll get some water,” Daniel replied and got up from the table.

We ate the rest of our meal mostly in silence. We all seemed really hungry.

When Daniel had finished eating, he wiped across his mouth with a napkin, setting it to one side.

“So, Kayla. I thought tomorrow if you wanted, we could head out to see my gallery? You haven’t been there before and Parker will be there. I would like to show you the place. Also, there are lots of stores out there. I know you women like to shop. Maybe we could grab lunch while we were there or one of the famous ice creams from Creamy Delights?

I wondered what Daniel’s gallery was like and shopping definitely would pass some time. I wasn’t keen on the having lunch with him part, so maybe I could time it so we just did the ice cream?

“Sounds great,” I replied. “Anything where I see my little stepbro having to bust a nut sounds fun.”

Parker raised his middle finger at me.

I raised my glass at him and took another large sip.

While Parker finished eating I took the time to check him out. He ate like there was no filling him up, taking not just seconds, but thirds. As I had noted before he was heavy built. Back out in Los Angeles, I bet he was quite the lothario. He had the gift of the gab and with his being loaded I had bet the girls had flocked to him. He was going to have to work harder for women’s attention now that he was relatively broke.

I felt eyes on mine and turned to see Daniel watching me, watching Parker.

“Would you like some more wine or water?” he asked me.

“More wine, please. It’s going down well.”

A smirk appeared at the edge of Parker’s mouth and I realized what I had just said. He was such a juvenile sleaze ball!

I kicked him under the table and he yelled ‘Ow’ really loudly.

“Dad,” she kicked me, he winked at Dan.

Dan choked a little on his water.

“Sorry, man. I was just messing with you. Only we’re like one fucked-up dysfunctional family, aren’t we?”

Daniel took a deep breath. “Well, I rather you both saw me as a friend, rather than a father figure. I’m not that much older than either of you.”

“Eleven years,” I said.

“Fourteen years.” added Parker.

“Okay, I got it. I’m an old man at the side of you youngsters.” Daniel got up and started to clear the table. His mood had turned a little sour. I guess we had really upset him with our jokes about his age.
