She got right up in his face. “Hurt me, Maverick.”

In the next instant, she found herself flat on the bed with a furious Maverick looming over her. Her body thrilled at the feel of him lying along the length of her. Damn, his weight felt glorious.

“You better watch it, wildcat,” he growled from above her. “The FBI used to own you, but they handed you over to my club. Copper walked out of this room and gave you to me. You know what that means?”

She shook her head. Was it sick for her nipples to harden at the menace in his voice?

“It means I own your ass. You’re mine to do with as I please. If I want to tie you to this bed and keep you on the edge of orgasm all damn night, no one’s gonna come to save you. Maybe after hours of being a sopping wet mess, begging for release, you’ll finally understand some of what you put me through.” As he spoke, he ground his cock against her clit. She was already a sopping wet mess.

He might be covering it with anger and sexy talk, but Stephanie still heard the underlying pain, the kind of pain that wrapped itself around a person’s heart and soul, squeezing the life out of them. And she’d done that to him with her actions. With her lies.

All of a sudden, everything crashed down on her, the loss of her job, the callous way her superior tossed her aside, being sent away by Copper, losing Maverick’s love and trust, the impending confrontation with Lefty.

Giant tears rose up and spilled from Stephanie’s eyes before she had a chance to try to stem them. Her breath hitched, and a sob tore through her chest. “I’m s-sorry.” She finally said the words that held so much more meaning than just those seven little letters strewn together.

Above her, Maverick froze.

Great, not only was she melting down, but right when they were about to get to the sexy time. Nothing said come fuck me like a hysterical woman.

“At first, I-I was afraid to say a-anything. I t-thought S-shark would kill m-me. Then K-king almost c-called me A-agent Little when h-he was in The B-box. And I l-lost my shit on him. Then y-you killed him. It was t-too late to s-say anytthing about who I w-was.”

“Shhh, Stephanie, take a breath. You can barely speak.” He framed her face with his hands and landed a soft kiss on her lips. Even though it was nothing more than a peck, his flavor seeped into her system, calming her.

“I left here planning to never see you again even though I had all these insane feelings. I thought they’d go away. They were just because of the high-intensity circumstances we met under. Then they ordered me to come back. Someone else would have been sent if I’d refused. Coming myself was the only way to make sure you and your club were safe from arrest. I was already in so deep, and then…” She looked up at his motionless form. “And then I fell in love with you. It wasn’t supposed to happen. I’m so—”

“Shhh.” He kissed her again. This time longer and deeper, his tongue playing with her lips until she yielded to him. As their mouths tangled, relearning each other after days apart, she felt the shattered pieces of her heart bonding back together. He was her missing link, the one thing she needed to be whole.

After a few moments, he pulled back, and like a shameless hussy, she followed him with her mouth, trying to get more. He chuckled but denied her further kisses. “I always wondered what flipped your switch and made you go all attack dog on King that day.”

Heat rushed to her cheeks as she recalled the loss of control that resulted in her beating her old partner. “Now you know. Now you know everything.”

Mav’s smile died. “I’m sorry for all you went through.”

She shushed him with fingers over his mouth. “You have nothing to be sorry for. This was all on me.”

He kissed her hard one time. “Okay, here’s how this is going to go. Since we already established I own your ass, you just have to follow orders, okay?”

Oh lord, she’d created a monster. A sexy, flirty, tatted, and pierced monster. “Okay…”

“I’ve never wanted a steady woman in my life. Then I met you, and I barely survived the past two days without you. All the shit that’s happened? It’s forgiven and in the past. Yes, Copper was right about how it’s going to take the brothers and probably the ol’ ladies some time to build trust again, but between you and me, the past is done. Over after this conversation. We won’t talk about it again. I will give you my trust. You will give me your trust. You’ll be my ol’ lady. You have no choice about that. I’m never fucking letting you go anyway. You get any pushback from my family, you bring it to me, you hear? You’re mine to protect, and that includes from my stubborn, asshole brothers.”
