Questions might also be asked why he wasn’t taking advantage of their accommodating sweet butts the same as he had in the past.

Or at least, she sure as hell hoped he wasn’t taking advantage of their generosity while at the same time he spent time in her bed and inside her. Especially since he hadn’t used a condom with her once.

He twisted his head toward her and misread her frown. “You got a problem with that?”

Yes, she damn well did. Oh wait. “With?”

“With keepin’ what I tell you to yourself.”

“Depends on what it is.” She wasn’t giving him some blanket assurance without even knowing what info he was about to share.

“It’ll effect your family, too, if you don’t,” he warned.

“What will?”

The way his chest expanded slowly made ghost-like fingers crawl down her spine.

“Darlin’, Levi’s sperm donor was the clan’s former leader.”

She rose up on her elbow and propped her head on her hand. “What?”

“Yeah. How Levi came to be was how all this shit with the Shirleys started. Well, if you don’t count them shootin’ at Trip and pluggin’ a bunch of holes in his wrecker when he tried to repo one of their fuckin’ hoopties.”

She wasn’t sure what to address first. The fact that Levi came from Shirley blood or that the Shirleys were shooting at people and getting away with it. “They shot at Trip? Why didn’t he file a report?”

Rook raised one eyebrow in answer and she rolled her eyes.

He ignored her gesture and began to talk…

She wasn’t sure if she blinked once, or even breathed, as Rook told her about Sig finding Autumn, Levi’s birth mother, running down the mountain naked and pregnant.

She also wasn’t sure if she believed the story because it was so freaking crazy.

He told her about the clan taking Dyna in revenge for the club taking Vernon Shirley’s unborn son.

What she was sure about was huge chunks of those stories were missing. But the little he revealed was horrifying. That meant the complete story had to be even crazier.

And damning. For both the Shirleys and the MC.

No wonder the club wanted to keep law enforcement out of it.

But after what happened to Autumn, and then Dyna, the beef between the Shirleys and the club had grown to epic proportions.

He wouldn’t explain why he’d been up that mountain those times she caught him or the time she rescued his ass before being raped by those crazy mountain women.

She shuddered at the memory.

She finally asked, “What aren’t you telling me?” when he simply stopped talking and left some really important details unsaid.

When he didn’t answer, she prodded, “There’s a war going on in our town under our very fucking noses and I’m assuming Max is clueless about it. If he is and he finds out, he’ll blow a damn gasket. But Matt and Carly have to have an idea of how their son was conceived, right? I mean, they agreed to adopt Levi, they have to know some of the details?”

“Not much. The bare minimum. To keep your cousin from goin’ up there himself, doin’ somethin’ stupid and leavin’ Levi fatherless.”

For chrissakes, that sweet, innocent baby boy had come from really tumultuous beginnings.

“I can’t believe Matt agreed to that.” She sighed. “God, Carly wanted a baby so badly that my cousin would do anything to give her what she wanted. Even keep his mouth shut when he shouldn’t.”

Just like Jet would keep her mouth shut when she shouldn’t, either. She mentally groaned.

“Levi’s their son now, no one else’s. So, don’t say a fuckin’ word to him and stir shit up. Don’t fuckin’ say a word to your chief, either, Jet. We’re handlin’ this.”

She rolled until she was straddling his waist and staring down into his face. “That’s a huge ask, Rook.”

He had to know that keeping what he just told her to herself went against the very fiber of her being. Being a cop was in the Bryson blood, that meant she had a hard time not being loyal to the blue. By keeping the secret of what may be going down between the clan and the club, she felt like she was a terrible cop. Even a traitor. To her PD, to her own family.

“Wouldn’t have told you shit if I thought you couldn’t keep your fuckin’ mouth shut.”

His words were once again proof he trusted her and was placing his own freedom in her hands.

Christ, that was a dilemma she really didn’t need.

Rook was only her lover but the PD—no matter whether an officer had the last name of Bryson or not—was her family.

Even so, whatever the club was doing on the mountain was for their family. Their brotherhood. While she understood it, she didn’t like how they were going about it.

She also didn’t like that the Shirleys weren’t legally being held accountable for the heinous crimes they’d committed. Law enforcement should be dealing with that clan, not civilians. Not a bunch of bikers.
