“No, I do not find it funny,” Jay retorted, his voice a velvet caress that did not soothe my frayed nerves.

His finger entered me, and I gritted my teeth in pleasure.

“I was just recalling the last time we were in this office and you spoke for that long without taking a breath,” he explained, mouth against my neck. He put another finger inside of me, and my hand clenched onto his forearm.

“The time I thought you were going to kill me, you mean?” I asked, my voice breathy.

“The very same.” He grazed my skin with his teeth, his fingers moving slowly inside of me. “It was what made me fall in love with you then, Stella. From that moment, I knew I’d move heaven and earth to make you mine. That I’d rip apart my life to make room for you to fit in it.” He made the come-hither motion with his finger, the magic gesture that caused me to hiss harshly, moments from climax.

Jay stopped moving his fingers suddenly. “I’ve noticed you’re not on birth control, pet. Noticed that you’re not pregnant, too, since your body works like clockwork. It’s only been six months, though, Stella. Six months full of change, of stress.” He moved his finger slightly, and I groaned in pleasure. “Nothing is wrong with you, Stella. Everything about you is perfect. And when the time comes when your body isn’t like clockwork, when we make something together, I’ll be happy.” He pressed his lips softly to mine.

“But what if we can’t?” I whispered a fear that had simmered and grown these past months.

“Then, Stella, I’ll move heaven and earth to make sure you get a baby,” he promised against my neck, goosebumps peppering my skin. “For now, how about we practice making one? Because what I’m doing now isn’t how it’s done.” He moved his fingers out of me, lifting them to his lips, and while keeping his eyes on mine, tasted them.

After that, he fucked me against the glass.

Chapter 12

Three Months Later

I woke up to Jay’s mouth in between my legs on our wedding day.

Wren had tried her level best to steal me away, had even booked a suite at the Waldorf Astoria for all of us. Jay had let Wren run wild on this wedding. Maybe because he was so busy. He had been distracted these past few months, tensions with his businesses. With people trying to encroach on his territory. We’d gone to Mexico last week so he could make a deal with some Mexican drug cartel. I’d asked to know it all, to be rid of the secrets, so I’d gotten it all.

I’d been pretty overwhelmed, not to mention busier than I’d ever been at work. Jay had forced me to hire an assistant, threatening to pay for it myself if I didn’t. He didn’t like the longer hours, the less time we spent together, the way I was running myself ragged. I didn’t much like it either. I’d grudgingly held interviews, found Joseph. There had been a ton of applicants, my name having gotten rather well-known lately. I couldn’t have fathomed the heights my career would reach, hadn’t known how to handle everything.

Which was where Jay stepped in. He had spent an entire weekend in my office—the one he’d had renovated right beside his—going over my accounts and settling all kinds of tax and finance crap.

It had taken all weekend because I was irresponsible and had not kept organized accounts. Also because Jay was dedicated to christening every single surface in my office, which it turned out, there were many.

Jay continued to surprise and amaze me. I’d known he was intelligent; you didn’t go from the streets to where he was without smarts. But he was also patient, calm and non-judgmental, speaking in soft tones, in layman’s terms.

When the call went out for the assistant job, I had applicants from all the Ivy League schools, from Parsons, all with impressive resumes. But Joseph, the high school dropout wearing a vintage Tom Ford suit with sneakers and a tee underneath, caught my attention. He was quick witted, stylish and knew a lot about fashion. He had big goals, and I knew that not a lot of people would give him a chance, and if they did, he’d be working crap jobs for crap pay. Thanks to Jay, I wasn’t paying any rent, barely buying any of my clothes, and thanks to myself, I was earning more than ever. Jay had me incorporated, so I was even able to offer Joseph full benefits.

I’d still been busy leading up to the wedding, and luckily, the only thing I’d really had to do was be there for the fittings. Wren had taken care of everything else. She’d tried to take care of the bill, the only other thing she’d gone head to head with Jay with. But just like getting me to the suite at the Astoria, she didn’t get her way.
