Kiss my Boss (Plot Twist, I'm Pregnant 1) - Page 18

Logan kissed me on the cheek. “Call me if you need me.”

“I don’t think I will.”

“I know, but call me anyway,” he said, giving my arm one last squeeze before he walked out the door and got into the truck parked across the street.

We were one of the few left in the bar, but I didn’t want to stay. I was ready to go home and go to sleep. Tonight had been exhausting. I had wanted to get drunk and celebrate my new job, but now I’d close my eyes tonight and see Brian’s face.

“Do you have everything?” Godrick asked as he flicked his gaze to the table I sat at and dragged his eyes back to mine. He was so handsome. I loved the way his dark eyes almost disappeared into the shadows of the bar, it was like he was a shadow himself, but he was impossible to hide. Everything about him was too large. The way he walked, talked, his name, his clothes, everything held a strong energy that no one could miss.

I had my purse, and that was the only thing I came into the bar with. “Yeah, I’m good.”

“Haden! I’m going to take Lucy home. I’ll catch up with you later.”

“You got it, Rick.”

Godrick held open the door for me, and it took me a minute to figure out he was waiting for me to walk through. “Oh, sorry,” I shook my head, feeling like a bit of ditz. “I’m not used to guys holding doors open for me besides my brother.”

“You’re with the wrong guys then, Lucy.”

If he only knew how right that was. “You don’t have to take me home. I only live a few blocks away.”

“I would never let a woman walk alone in New York City; plus, I want to walk you home.”

“I think you’re just curious as to who Brian is and why he was there.” I lifted my gaze from the sidewalk to him, and since Godrick walked next to me, I saw his profile. Not many people looked good from all angles but Godrick did. His dark hair and stubble on his chin seemed darker now in the night. His skin was pale, and for a second, he reminded me of one of those hulking vampires in paranormal romance novels.

Why did I like that?

“You caught me,” he said, staring up at the starlit sky. “What’s your story, Lucy Green?”

I shoved my hands in the back pockets of my jeans and sighed, the air cooler than I thought when is saw the frozen cloud leave my mouth. It didn’t feel cold. I was still sweating from the scene at Poppies. “I’m pretty boring. There is nothing to tell.”

“What happened back there is anything but boring.” He gave me a sideways grin, and it made me trip over my feet like a complete idiot. “Woah, you okay?”

“I’m fine. It’s okay.” His hand was on my arm to make sure I didn’t fall, and he let it linger. I wanted to slide my hand through his arm, walk hand in hand, but I knew that would never happen. Godrick was being kind, and maybe he wasn’t kind to others, but with me, he seemed different.

“Are you going to tell me, or am I going to have to hire a private investigator?”

“Something tells me you would.” I nudged his side with my elbow, and somehow, we ended up walking closer together. Every step we took, our arms brushed against each other, and that fluttery sensation in my belly, the one teenage girl’s feel when a boy noticed them, made my heart liquefy from the warmth.

“I would.”

“That’s an invasion of privacy, you know.” We stopped at a coffee cart that was just packing up, and Godrick gave the man a fifty dollar bill. The older man seemed annoyed but glad he didn’t have to pour out the coffee from the pot.

Godrick handed me a paper cup, steaming billowing from the hole in the lid. “Of course it is. I love invading privacy. When I want to know something, I want to know it. I don’t like to play games. I don’t believe in secrets.”

“Interesting,” I said, blowing air on the coffee to cool it off.

“Why is that interesting?”

“Because you seem like a big bundled up pile of secrets. Coming from a guy who says he doesn’t believe in them, I don’t know; I find it interesting.”

He spun around in front of me and started walking backwards. He licked his lips and grinned, showing his perfect square teeth. “How did you change the subject? I asked about you.”

“I can’t get to know you either? If it is only a one-way street, then you are hiding something. I believe that is something you said you didn’t believe in. Secrets, is it?”

“You’re sassy.”

“It’s true.”
